Overview

You will serve as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Helper for the Facilities Management Service located in Seattle, Washington. You will perform a variety of straightforward work in installing and identifying the causes of faulty refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, and repairing the equipment.

Duties

  • You will identify the causes of faulty equipment and make repairs on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems, such as walk-in and reach-in coolers, refrigerators, ice cream cabinets, deep freezers, evaporative coolers, attic and evaporative fans, and other equipment of comparable complexity.
  • You will conduct tests of air conditioning units and make straightforward repairs that can be made without specialized equipment.
  • You will perform visual, audible and mechanical checks for proper temperature of conditioned spaces; proper operation of different parts of the refrigeration cycle; proper oil levels; unusual noises; overheated bearings; loose connections; faulty insulation; frayed or loose belts, gaskets and pulleys; and other similar defects.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Physical and Safety Requirements

The work may require carrying equipment up to 50 pounds; occasional climbing or reaching parts of systems on ladders or platforms; stooping, bending, kneeling and working in uncomfortable positions; exposure to refrigerants and electrical hazards.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT: EPA Section 608 Technician Certification Type 4 (Universal) is required for technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release ozone-depleting refrigerants. This applies to appliances containing most substitute refrigerants, including HFCs.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the duties. Your resume should detail knowledge, skills and abilities. Applicants will be rated according to the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Examples include experience with refrigeration cycles, temperature measurement, refrigerants, troubleshooting, testing and minor repairs, and ability to replace major components as needed.

Preferred Experience

Experience in identifying the causes of faulty equipment and performing repairs on various domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems as listed above.

Working Conditions

Most work is indoors but may involve temperature changes when working on equipment such as walk-in freezer units. Potential for cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and exposure to refrigerant gases; work may require climbing and working in confined or hard-to-reach spaces.
