Make an impact. Love the outdoors and looking for a seasonal job? The City of Salem is in search of Seasonal Parks Maintenance Workers to maintain our beautiful city and parks. The City of Salem is looking for qualified candidates to fill openings for a Seasonal Parks Maintenance Worker as a full-time in the Parks and Recreation Department. The successful candidates for this position will assist in all Parks and Recreation Department maintenance activities that would support a diverse recreation program as well as assist in large and small events that occur in the many shelters and amphitheaters operated by the City of Salem.
The City of Salem has an extensive park system with 91 parks and over 2300 acres of property, including a variety of Neighborhood and Community parks, nationally recognized softball complex, large event amphitheaters, reservable shelters, high use soccer and multi-use sports fields as well as hard court surface facilities including pickleball, tennis, and basketball.
What you will do
The Seasonal Parks Maintenance Worker will perform landscape maintenance and installations, facilities maintenance, mowing, as well as painting and construction related activities. Maintenance workers will operate a full array of landscape tools including push mowers, blowers, weed eaters, and edgers. You may be required to drive city owned vehicles and must possess a valid driver’s license. You may be required to pull large tow behind trailers regularly. You may be comfortable and knowledgeable in communicating with the public about the work being done by Parks and Recreation Department.
Additional information on job responsibilities
- Performs maintenance tasks including clean and repair restrooms, replace light bulbs, collects debris and garbage, clean and maintains picnic areas, inspect parks, picnic and playground areas for safety hazards, shovel snow.
- Individually or as a member of a crew, perform maintenance and construction tasks such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, welding, cement finishing, or other similar trades.
- Operate and maintain a variety of equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, trenchers, mowers, edgers, diagnostic instruments, and other power tools used in parks maintenance.
- Care for natural turf fields, monitor soil composition for proper drainage and grass support.
- Water lawns, trees, turf, and plants. Monitor irrigation methods to adjust water usage and prevent waste. Maintain irrigation systems, including winterizing and spring startup.
- Follow planned landscaping designs to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers and mulch. Maintain beds by weeding, edging, applying fertilizer, herbicides or other chemicals as required.
- Operate and maintain a greenhouse and related facilities; perform horticultural or greenhouse work including propagation, cultivation, and care of a large variety of trees, shrubs, ground covers, or plants.
- Speak with the public about the work being done by parks and recreation department.
- Physical Requirements: lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects with or without accommodation. Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing 2 hours or more, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, manual dexterity, grasping and repetitive motions with or without accommodation. Work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, as well as entering small, confined spaces.
- Perform work requiring visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation. This includes tasks such as reading and interpreting blueprints or technical drawings, operating motor vehicles, working with computer terminals, conducting visual inspections for small defects or parts, operating and monitoring machinery, using precision measurement instruments, and performing detailed assembly or fabrication tasks that require close visual attention.
Work schedule
The position is expected to maintain availability Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime on weekends to help support events. Working during all weather conditions, including extreme weather events would be required for this position. This position will work under the supervision of the Parks Field Supervisor.

Minimum qualifications
- Must pass the pre-employment background check.
- Must have a Driver License and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
- High school graduate or GED preferred. Some general maintenance, repair, grounds keeping, construction trade or other related manual labor experience.
- Positions that require a CDL will be eligible to receive a $3.00 per hour (maximum $20.88/hr) pay differential and will be required to pass a drug test (including marijuana).

Preferred Qualifications (not required to apply)
- Certifications and/or Licenses:
- CPR/AED Certification.
- Oregon Commercial Driver’s license (CDL). For CDL drivers, must pass a pre-employment drug screen (including marijuana).
- Oregon Pesticide License.
- Forklift certification.
