Overview
Under the supervision and direction of the Electrical Shop Supervisor, the Electrician performs maintenance, repair, and construction of campus electrical distribution systems, interior and exterior lighting circuitry, electro-mechanical equipment, and appliances.

Budgeted Salary: $52.90/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties
45% - Journeyman-Level Electrical Work
- Performs journeyman-level electrician duties on all campus buildings.
- Performs repair and electrical construction duties, including installing electrical distribution for buildings, street and path lighting with associated circuits, wiring devices, panels, conduits, and related equipment up to 12 kV; utilizes diagnostic instruments (infrared scanners, megger, Volt-Ohm meters, ammeters, circuit tracers, etc.).
- Installs breakers, lugs, new conductors, and conduit connectors; references manufacturer manuals and specifications as needed.
- Performs circuit load calculations, voltage drop, and conduit fill calculations.
- Performs estimates and project support, including plan review.
- Drives a University vehicle to transport electrical materials and tools between campus work areas.
40% - General Preventive Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Performs preventive maintenance and repair of electrical motors, controls, motor control centers, building lighting systems, electrical panels, circuit breakers, fusible disconnects, emergency generators, building elevators, rotating machinery, street and path lighting, control relays, standby lighting systems, and other equipment.
- Diagnoses electrical shorts, open circuits, and resistance issues using instructions, drawings, sketches, and electrical blueprints.
10% - 12KV Preventive Maintenance
- Performs preventive maintenance and assists in repairs of 12 kV distribution systems including 12 kV and AC circuits and cogeneration systems.
5% - Safety & Inspection
- Performs safety inspections and routine maintenance on tools and equipment.
- Attends safety and training classes; adheres to safety procedures and PPE requirements.
- Maintains daily timesheets; communicates with campus stakeholders; assists in inventory management; responds to outage callouts after hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Required Qualifications
- California Dept of Industrial Relations General electrician certification or equivalent (minimum 4-5 years of experience).
- Experience with circuit testing equipment, diagnostic instruments, infrared scanners, and electrical appliances.
- Journeyman-level electrician qualifications or equivalent experience.
- Ability to maintain and troubleshoot building electrical systems, including lighting, power, control systems, and electrical appliances.
- Knowledge of electrical codes and safety standards (NEC, CAL-OSHA, NFPA 70E, OSHA).
- Willingness to be trained on a variety of electrical specialties (e.g., Elevators, VFDs, generators, PV systems).
- Ability to read and follow architectural drawings and specifications; create material lists and place orders.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration with coworkers and campus community.

- Ability to integrate sustainability concepts into daily work.
Special Conditions of Employment

- Valid California driver’s license and DMV pull notice program participation.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, climb ladders, lift up to 60 lbs. and up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
- Occasional evenings, weekends, overtime, on-call, and after-hours emergencies may be required.
