The Senior Director, Water for Birds and People, North America, leads Audubon’s Initiative to create a connected network of protected, managed, and restored freshwater rivers, lakes, and wetland habitats. The role focuses on science-based water management, long-term water policy solutions, and on-the-ground restoration demonstrations, engaging Audubon’s network and partners to stabilize and increase populations of priority bird species and support clean water for people. The position contributes to Audubon’s Habitat Conservation goals and other strategic initiatives. Under the direction of the Vice President, Habitat, North America, the Senior Director will establish priorities, goals, strategies, and tactics for water efforts in the United States and advise on work in Canada and Mexico as part of the hemispheric vision. Solutions include policy and on-the-ground conservation. This role collaborates with peers to implement and scale these strategies and ensure an integrated approach to water conservation across the hemisphere. The Senior Director will build and maintain relationships with key water leaders, coalitions, partners, and government officials and will serve as a fundraising partner with Development to elevate Audubon’s leadership with external stakeholders. This is a hybrid position based in Audubon’s New York City or Washington, DC offices. Remote candidates within the United States will be considered. Compensation

Salary range based on geo-differentials: National: $144,000 – $162,000 per year Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY: $162,000 – $182,000 per year NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle: $180,000 – $202,000 per year Essential Functions

Develop Audubon’s Water for Birds and People conservation goals, priorities, and strategies contributing to organizational habitat conservation goals. Determine policy priorities for the Healthy Birds Healthy Planet policy agenda; manage key water policy staff and partner with Government Affairs to advance the policy strategy. Collaborate with conservation leaders designing and implementing local, regional, and national plans to ensure impact and scale toward policy and conservation goals; work with colleagues across the hemisphere for an integrated approach. Lead day-to-day implementation of the Water for Birds and People teams and work with the Vice President for Habitat Conservation to manage the initiative’s budget. Support and drive innovative water management initiatives, such as the Great Salt Lake Water Trust and other Audubon priorities. Manage internal teams by establishing objectives and priorities, reviewing them regularly, and convening communities of practice to support effective execution. Ensure tracking, measurement, and reporting of work toward organizational habitat conservation goals. Develop and maintain partnerships in the water conservation space; elevate Audubon’s leadership with external leaders, coalitions, and partners. Build relationships with government agencies responsible for decisions and public funding impacting Water for Birds and People priorities. Collaborate with communications and marketing to support goals via print, online, social media, digital organizing; develop position documents, fact sheets, articles, newsletters, press releases, and social posts. Partner with Development on fundraising for habitat conservation priorities and cultivate public funding opportunities. Support a culture of philanthropy and public funding efforts. Collaborate with colleagues across the Americas on joint planning and execution of shared priorities. Maintain and foster a culture of safety. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Experience

10+ years of progressive experience in policy, government relations, advocacy, science-based conservation, or public service, including leadership of successful conservation efforts. 3+ years in a leadership position; a comparable mix of education and experience will be considered. Solid expertise in conservation strategies, water management and/or wildlife conservation issues and policy; strong connections with leading experts in the field. Understanding of conservation issues and trends; ability to oversee multiple projects in a matrixed environment, meet financial goals, and coordinate with partners. Self-starter who collaborates with staff at multiple levels. Strong interpersonal skills, judgment, and ability to build coalitions with diverse stakeholders. Willingness to contribute to fundraising; public funding experience preferred. Technically proficient with Microsoft Office and web-based tools. Excellent written and verbal communication; media experience a plus. Commitment to workplace excellence and willingness to travel.
