Design Manager

Aligned Data Centers DEPARTMENT: Platform Delivery REPORTS TO: Senior Design Manager or Director, Design Management SUMMARY: This role supports all aspects of major technical programs targeting colocation and hyperscale builds, including oversight of employees and third-party teams in the preconstruction, design, and construction phases. The Design Manager collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, demonstrates strong communication, and delivers efficient, innovative solutions while providing exceptional service to customers and vendors. Duties And Responsibilities
Drive projects from inception through turnover, with emphasis on preconstruction and design phases; assume project lead at design hand-off and transition leadership to the Construction Manager at GC mobilization. Direct Accountabilities
Coordinate with Land Enablement to manage offsite improvements, early permitting, easements, and environmental studies. Develop and maintain project risk registers from land enablement through turnover to Aligned Operations. Project Design Management
Onboard third-party design teams and create design schedules to meet project needs. Oversee external design teams through project completion and turnover to Aligned Operations. Manage design deliverables, stakeholder reviews, and comment cycles; ensure design progression and gating. Collaborate with SMEs, Operations, and CMs to ensure design compliance with Aligned Design Efficiency Capture (DEC). Identify and track design variances and obtain necessary approvals. Enforce alignment with Aligned’s Cost Control Log (CCL) and CDE matrices. Maintain clear communications and regular reporting with CM, internal and external stakeholders, and leadership. Create and manage project metrics in Smartsheets; support administrative duties related to design management. Assist CM with budgeting and cost models for design costs and timelines; help prepare funding requests. Coordinate with CM to prepare quarterly project updates for leadership. Conduct technical reviews of construction plans with awareness of data center architectural design; convey concepts to internal teams with proper documentation. Support day-to-day program activities with architects, consultants, equipment providers, and GCs; coordinate with Building Operations to promote safety and compliance. Serve as primary support to the CM from GC mobilization to turnover to Operations. Collaborate with sales and solutions engineering during revenue generation to meet technical deliverables. Interface with customers through fit-out design, construction, and integration; accountable for the successful delivery of customer contracts. Manage projects with the business in mind, aligning with CRC/SLT/Board directives; pursue continuous improvement and innovation. Strongly Desired Working Experience And Knowledge Of
Design engineering experience Building design process and design deliverables management Management of design teams Exposure to IPD, Design-Build, and/or construction management Data center design/construction experience, specifically with MEP systems Project Management Software (MS Projects, Prolog, Procore, BIM 360, or similar) Knowledge and experience with CAD is a plus Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or equivalent 5+ years managing commercial construction project design programs; data center experience strongly preferred Mechanical/Electrical background preferred Advanced experience in Excel, Smartsheets and/or AutoCAD Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to multi-task with strong time and change management skills Discretion and confidentiality, with ability to follow directions and meet deadlines Team player with strong communication skills; ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications Knowledge of construction cost estimating methods and development of scopes of work; ability to forecast impacts of design and schedule changes Travel up to 25% may be required General Competencies
