Olympia, Washington – Thurston County Although this is a hybrid opportunity, the successful incumbent must reside within the State of Washington and be available to report to the duty station in Olympia as needed. The selected candidate may telework up to 1 day per week during probation at the supervisor’s discretion. With sustainability and conservation in mind, you will deliver technical and professional engineering, construction, and maintenance to sustain facilities, infrastructure, and ecosystems under the Department’s care. This is an opportunity to perform environmental engineering duties for the restoration of existing facilities and construction of new facilities for fish supplementation, water distribution, fish passage, wildlife viewing, marine and inland recreational water access, and general Department infrastructure facilities. What to Expect
Among the varied responsibilities within this role, the position will: Design/Manage Engineering Projects Under direction of a licensed Professional Engineer, prepare preliminary engineering designs, cost estimates, feasibility studies, final designs, plans and specifications using civil, structural, hydraulic, and environmental engineering skills to support the Department’s mission. Review and/or approve engineering plans and specifications, site plans, engineering reports and operation and maintenance of environmental systems. Prepare, review, and negotiate environmental permits, regulatory orders, environmental plans and monitoring programs for assigned programs. Provide engineering expertise to review and evaluate environmental permits and permit applications. Manage Public Works (PW) Contracts and Architects/Engineers (A/E) Contracts Administer and serve as the Department's representative for PW contracts and A/E contracts for design of capital construction projects. Manage PW contracts and contractors; manage A/E contracts and consultants. Obtain, update, and maintain plans, permits, and standard operating procedures. Create and Manage Budgets Develop and monitor project budgets. Assist in budget implementation, forecasts, and administration. Working Conditions Work setting: 70% Office; 30% Travel/Field. Duties may involve all weather conditions, rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery surfaces, and work near water. Some tasks require navigation and work in water environments. Schedule
- Typically 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with increased hours during the construction season. Travel requirements

- Internal WDFW Teams including Fish, Wildlife, Habitat, and more Qualifications
Required Qualifications Option 1: A Master’s degree in one of the following fields — sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, electrical, structural, or related — and one (1) year of demonstrated engineering experience. Option 2: A Bachelor’s degree in one of the listed fields and two (2) years of environmental engineering experience. Option 3: Six (6) years of professional environmental engineering experience in related fields. License: Valid driver’s license. In addition to the above, a minimum of one (1) year of professional experience in the following areas (can be gained concurrently with the options above): Principles and practices of engineering Physical and biological sciences as related to engineering Laws and regulations governing environmental issues Evaluating technical engineering data and computations Developing designs involving engineering theory and judgment Plan, promote, and administer engineering projects Writing engineering reports Preferred Qualifications In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all of the following: Valid Washington State Professional Engineering license Knowledge of fish hatchery operations, fish behavior, fish passage and screening regulations Public Works contracting laws and regulations Engineer-in-Training Certificate Application Materials
