Overview

Choose How You Move (CHYM) Communications Director is a role in the Mayor’s Office CHYM team. CHYM is a transportation improvement program approved by voters and the largest capital program in Nashville’s history, with a projected $3.1 billion in capital projects and $111 million in annual operating expenditures. The role focuses on driving communications, media relations, and brand strategy for the program, providing program oversight among multiple implementing entities, and ensuring high-quality, transparent, and streamlined messaging, visual content, and outreach. The CHYM Communications Director reports to the CHYM Chief Program Officer, works with the Mayor’s Office communications team, and collaborates with Metro Nashville departments (NDOT, WeGo, Metro Planning) and other entities involved in CHYM implementation. The role will coordinate communication strategies across Metro and the Mayor’s Office to inform program delivery and maintain consistent visibility and branding. The position will oversee the development of communications and branding strategies and guide deliverables by a third-party program management team. Mayoral staff (non-civil service) receive 15 days of Paid Time Off and 12 sick days annually. Responsibilities

Develops, implements, and updates a comprehensive communication strategy aligned with agency partners to increase public awareness, understanding, and engagement of stakeholders, community-based organizations, community members, advisory committees, government agencies, and media. Collaborates with CHYM team and partner agencies to learn program implementation processes, project details, and community dynamics to communicate complex information in everyday terms and visuals; anticipates issues and provides engagement strategy expertise. Ensures accuracy, relevancy, and consistency in key messages, voice, themes, branding, and design guidelines. Ensures that the Mayor’s Office Communications, Civic & Community Engagement, and Legislative Teams are consulted on externally facing communications, engagement, or media-focused components of CHYM activities. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with key communications staff in the Mayor’s Office, Metro departments, and the third-party program management team to lead aligned strategies. Coordinates communication strategies with the CHYM Project Delivery and Acceleration Director to align community input with project planning and to support a public-facing dashboard communicating program progress. Represents the CHYM program as an official spokesperson to the media and public; manages proactive and responsive media relations and external messaging; oversees press releases in coordination with the Mayor’s Office communications leadership. Oversees the design and production of official CHYM materials, including the website and collateral for events, community engagement, and digital/social media; consults with the Mayor’s Office communications team on development. Coordinates media and community events to highlight CHYM milestones. Oversees development and launch of a community ambassador program to support feedback with project teams, in partnership with the third-party program management team. Supports organization and convening of CHYM advisory committee to incorporate transportation and mobility subject-matter expertise and community leadership. Initiates and manages development and production for all CHYM digital assets across social media channels and the website; develops strategy for CHYM-specific social media handles as appropriate. Manages crisis communication for the CHYM program and briefs leadership on significant matters. Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and ten (10) years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, community engagement, or closely related field. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and under pressure. Demonstrated knowledge of transportation and mobility topics. Established relationships with a wide range of contacts in local media and among local community-based organizations. Skill in interpreting and disseminating information and ability to operate effectively in a collaborative work environment. Demonstrated ability to partner across teams to build consensus and drive a consistent and coherent message. Excellence in problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, and results orientation. High energy, sense of urgency, responsiveness to feedback, and thoroughness in work. Adaptable and agile, comfortable with change and juggling competing priorities. Must upload a resume and cover letter with the application. Additional Requirements

Experience providing communications, public relations, and brand support for complex municipal transportation projects of comparable scale to CHYM. Working knowledge of Metro rules, policies, and procedures. Master’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field (preferred).
