Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. Job Summary
Under supervision, the Senior Custodian is responsible for unskilled and semi-skilled cleaning and general maintenance duties that may include housekeeping of offices, classrooms, laboratories, residential areas, auditoriums, restrooms, and other designated public areas of campus buildings & properties. The Sr. Custodian must respond to campus-wide custodial emergencies and work orders such as spills, broken glass, bodily fluids, emergency restroom cleaning, restocking, etc. The incumbent is responsible for the cleanliness of assigned areas, individually or as part of a team, in performing custodial functions.
Appointment Information
Budgeted Salary: $23.83/hourly.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

Job Duties
- 40% - Daily Custodial Duties: Sweep, mop, scrub, dust, clean, and vacuum floor surfaces; clean and disinfect restrooms; empty wastebaskets; unstop minor drain blockages; wash glass and trim on entrance doors; receive and stock custodial supplies; report items needing repair; rearrange or move furniture; collect recycling; drive a University vehicle to transport cleaning materials.
- 25% - Periodic Custodial Duties: Clean woodwork, light fixtures, blinds, radiators, grills, ducts, walls, and other equipment; wax and polish furniture; operate floor buffers and related machines.
- 25% - Miscellaneous Custodial Duties: Spot clean carpets and upholstery; make beds and change linens; use cleaning compounds per labels; read chemical safety information; act as work leader for a small group of custodians; interact with campus staff and visitors as needed.
- 10% - Building Security Duties: Lock/unlock buildings; carry out emergency procedures and evacuations.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience in use of custodial equipment and tools (vacuum cleaners, powered floor polishers, carpet cleaners, mops, carts, PPE, etc.).
- Knowledge of proper and safe use of custodial equipment, chemicals, tools, etc.
- Ability to effectively communicate and follow oral and written instructions; read manuals, signs, and labels.
- Ability to work without close supervision; prioritize workload to meet daily schedule; adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to carry and operate technology (tablets, cell phones) and use programs/applications.
- Knowledge of procedures related to building safety.
- Ability to safeguard keys issued for assigned areas.
- Ability to incorporate sustainability concepts into daily work.
Special Conditions of Employment
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
- Must possess a valid California drivers license.
- Must have ability to operate cleaning equipment and perform custodial duties, including moving equipment and materials.
- Will complete training within established time frames including UC compliance training.
- Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
- The University has implemented a Vaccination Policy; employees must comply with applicable policies.
- CANRA: Mandated Reporter; must report known or suspected child abuse or neglect as defined by CANRA and sign a Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse prior to commencing employment.
