Summary

This position is located in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Fleet and Family Readiness Program, Fleet Readiness Department in the Fitness/Sports and Deployed Support Department. The purpose of this position is to assist the Fitness Director to provide fitness training and education at the installation serviced. This position is located at JEB Little Creek/Fort Story Rockwell Hall Gym.

Overview

Open to applications from 09/29/2025 to 10/06/2025. Salary is $19.50 to $21.50 per hour. Location: Virginia Beach, VA. Service: Competitive; Job family: 0188 Recreation Specialist. Appointment type: Permanent; Work schedule: Full-time; Not remote. Travel: Not required. Relocation: Not reimbursed.

Duties

Plans, markets and conducts ongoing fitness programs to provide conditioning for facility users. Instructs individuals and groups in proper conditioning and training for aerobic and muscular fitness, body composition and flexibility. Instructs patrons in proper use of equipment and self-monitored progress by preparing written instructions and procedures for use of equipment and safety of all users. Administers the fitness program, provides instruction on strength conditioning and instruction of fitness equipment. Approaches patrons on the fitness floor to provide training tips and correct unsafe or ineffective exercise techniques.

Assists with the management of the fitness center, including opening/closing, checking user IDs, monitoring towel usage, and returning weights and equipment. Inspects and cleans equipment, performs preventative maintenance and coordinates repairs. Provides information and instruction related to nutrition, cardiorespiratory and strength conditioning. Designs and implements fitness programs in compliance with rules and regulations. Designs and monitors unstructured self-paced programs for users and conducts newcomers orientation or equipment orientation classes for military, family members, civilians, retirees, and other eligible users. May assist fitness instructors and provides administrative support to operate the facility (registration of user privileges, waivers, training schedules, and records). Conducts inventories and maintains property accountability of equipment. Assists in budget preparation and facility needs assessment and performs other related duties as assigned.

Conditions of employment

Qualifications

Resumes must include KSAs as they relate to this position. A qualified candidate possesses the following:

  • Position requires a Certified Instructor/Trainer certificate and ability to obtain certification as a Navy Exercise Leader to teach Command Fitness Leader Course. Must possess a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate and First Aid certificate.
  • Education: Major study in general recreation or related fields (e.g., outdoor recreation, recreation and parks leadership, physical education, etc.).

OR

  • At least two years of documented experience applying principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation, including fitness, nutrition and wellness, management of fitness programs, and experience with a wide range of fitness equipment.

Education

Education: Major study – general recreation or related fields as listed above.
