Overview
Associate Dean for Development & Alumni Relations, School of Government & Policy Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins' focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine, strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients. This role has an onsite presence of 5 days per week in Washington D.C. The newly announced School of Government and Public Policy (SOGP), unveiled in October 2023, presents a pivotal opportunity for Johns Hopkins University to strengthen its footprint and engagement in the nation’s capital. This initiative serves society, trains the next generation of public servants, drives data-informed government innovation, and addresses complex challenges facing today’s policymakers. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Government and Public Policy and the Associate Vice President for Development of Johns Hopkins University, the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations provides strategic leadership in building a comprehensive development and alumni relations program for the school. This leadership position works with the Dean, the SOGP senior leadership team, and other leaders within Johns Hopkins Development and Alumni Relations, and is responsible for fundraising activities in support of the school’s mission and vision. The Associate Dean will plan and conduct all aspects of private fundraising, orchestrate major fundraising campaigns, manage programmatic activities involving major and principal donors, corporate and foundation relations, alumni outreach and engagement, and strategies to position the school to unaffiliated donors. The role also involves coordinating strategic partnerships with philanthropic organizations that enhance research, teaching, and policy impact through direct engagement with faculty. The position also supports the Dean in fundraising activities as directed. This position provides overall strategic leadership for SOGP fundraising priorities, manages donor-related publications and staff functions, and personally builds and manages a portfolio of individual prospects with capacity to give at least $150,000. The successful candidate should embrace the entrepreneurial nature of this opportunity in a well-established institution, grow the prospect pool, and manage it toward a mature, developed pool of individual, corporate, and foundation donors. Additional responsibilities include managing staff and budgets and working closely with the Dean and other University leadership. Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership and philanthropic partnership development for SOGP fundraising priorities, development, and alumni relations activities and staff functions. Exceed the School's fundraising campaign goal. Serve as a strategic convener and partnership architect, facilitating collaborations between donors, corporate partners, foundations, and faculty to advance philanthropic and academic objectives. Oversee the development, management and composition of the SOGP advisory board, leveraging board members as strategic partners in identifying and cultivating prospects. Develop and manage a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects ($100,000 and higher), using partnerships with the Dean, faculty, and central development offices. Lead overall prospect management, donor strategy development and solicitation activities for the school. Work with the senior leadership of SOGP to identify and execute strategic philanthropic partnerships aligned with institutional priorities. Engage the SOGP community in identifying and engaging individuals, corporations and foundations to partner in building the school’s brand and ensuring its success. Represent the Dean and SOGP to external and Johns Hopkins audiences, articulating the Dean's vision and priorities. Collaborate with the University's Principal Gifts Office to build the pool of engaged principal-level prospects ($5 million+) for SOGP. Over the next five years, hire, onboard, and train a team of development and alumni professionals. Plan, execute, and improve school-based development and alumni relations practices (gift acceptance, donor stewardship, prospect management, annual fund processes, etc.) in coordination with central development functions and policies. Represent SOGP within the university’s development organization and participate as a senior leader in an institution-wide division of more than 500 people. Promote an equitable and inclusive work environment; build community among alumni, donors, volunteers, and coworkers. Foster a professional workplace culture of mutual respect, collegiality, and collaboration for all members and affiliates of the institution. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree. 10 or more years of progressively responsible fundraising and development experience, with a strong track record of soliciting major and principal gifts. Frequent travel required, including staffing of evening and weekend events. Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree preferred. Ability to understand and articulate academic values/goals, work with faculty, administration, students, alumni and volunteer leadership; set objectives, performance standards, and motivate staff to achieve fundraising goals. Appreciation of academic planning and its relationship to fundraising principles. Creative, entrepreneurial leader with interest in building a top government and policy school at a leading research institution. Higher education experience preferred. Experience in fundraising for a new program or non-alumni affiliated organization is strongly preferred. Experience in capital campaign planning and implementation strategies. Demonstrated experience in managing advisory boards and volunteer leadership. Ability to interact, communicate, and work effectively with diverse individuals.
