Housing Staff Attorneys/Law Graduates (Right to Counsel) - Immediate Hire - Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan Offices. Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) fights poverty and seeks racial, social and economic justice for low‑income New Yorkers. LSNYC is the largest civil legal services provider in the country, with staff across five boroughs helping hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers annually. We seek law graduates or staff attorneys to join our Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan housing offices to implement New York City’s Right to Counsel law. LSNYC’s housing practice defends tenants in eviction proceedings, administrative hearings, affirmative litigation, and appeals. Attorneys will develop expertise in housing court practice, housing programs and subsidies, and public benefits; perform community outreach; provide legal information, advice and counseling; and conduct trainings for advocates, tenant associations, and community groups. This role is suited for candidates who thrive in a fast‑paced environment and use creative strategies in pursuit of justice. Responsibilities
Conduct intake and provide full legal representation in housing court proceedings to tenants referred through the Right to Counsel initiative and other referral sources. Litigate cases in housing court, administrative forums, appellate courts, and other state and federal courts on eviction defense and related matters; pursue affirmative litigation against agencies or actors affecting affordable housing. Develop expertise in housing court practice, housing programs and subsidies, and public benefits. Provide legal advice and counseling to tenants as needed. Conduct neighborhood-based legal clinics and know‑your‑rights trainings. Identify trends and recurring issues for potential impact litigation. Provide trainings to other advocates, tenant associations, community members, and groups. Qualifications
J.D. from an accredited law school and admission (or eligibility) to practice in New York. Commitment to social justice and work in low‑income communities and communities of color to advance equity. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations and conduct community outreach in low‑income neighborhoods. Excellent advocacy, analytical, writing, and leadership skills. Strong time management and organization skills for a fast‑paced caseload under Right to Counsel. Experience in housing, landlord/tenant, or related advocacy preferred. Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or another language frequently used by clients is preferred. Salary, Benefits & Employment Details
Salary is pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement. Salary ranges based on years of experience: 1‑10 years: $85,612 – $110,424 11‑20 years: $112,950 – $133,347 21+ years: $139,500 – $164,905 Benefits include exceptional healthcare with low copays, dental, vision, generous vacation (21 days first year, 28 days/year thereafter), 18 sick days/year, 14 paid holidays, and six months parental leave plus fertility treatment coverage. The position is hybrid, permitting 50% remote work where job duties permit. All non‑managerial staff are part of a union and receive a comprehensive benefits package. LSNYC staff can work remotely up to 50% of the time, depending on duties. About Us
