Job Description Under general direction, performs difficult and responsible professional engineering work in the field and office; and supervises engineering personnel, including consultants engaged in such work. The essential functions may vary by assignment and include:

Supervising professional and technical engineering personnel, consultants and staff; assigning and reviewing work.

Selecting, training, motivating, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff.

Analyzing workloads and budgets; supervising and reviewing the preparation of documents; reviewing bids for conformance with specifications and for award; negotiating and modifying contracts and resolving claims.

Supervising and monitoring the inspection of complex engineering projects and supervising field inspection staff.

Advising operating staff in water/wastewater treatment goals and process optimization; directing or participating in scientific research related to water and wastewater treatment and environmental effects.

Preparing and reviewing engineering designs, drawings and specifications; performing and reviewing difficult engineering calculations.

Reviewing federal, regional, and local regulations affecting engineering work.

Analyzing and solving complex engineering and process-related problems.

Writing, reviewing, and approving departmental correspondence, reports and other documents; conducting meetings and presentations to staff, committees, agencies, clients and the public.

May act as a project engineer or resident engineer for complex projects.

Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Five (5) years of verifiable professional Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering experience, including two (2) years equivalent to City and County of San Francisco class 5207 Associate Engineer or higher.

Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering.

Substitutions/Notes

Candidates licensed in other states may file and, if successful, will be placed under waiver until the required California license is presented.

No substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5207 Associate Engineer or higher.

A Masters degree in Environmental Engineering may substitute for 1 year of environmental experience.

A Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering may substitute for 2 years of environmental experience.

There is no general waiver for City employees with six months of 5207 experience to be admitted to the exam process.

License or Certificate Some positions may require a valid driver license.

Working Conditions Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in high places and confined spaces, exposure to weather, and extended periods of standing, bending, sitting, and walking on uneven surfaces. Schedules may include weekends, holidays, nights, or overtime.

Verification Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point in the process. Falsifying information may result in disqualification. All work experience, education and training must be included in the application by the filing deadline. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of a City application.

Selection Procedures After application submission, qualified candidates must complete all steps to advance, including:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire with Training and Experience Evaluation (100%): you will be prompted to complete this as part of the online application.

The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate and rank applicants on the eligible list/score report. The eligible list will be used for certification purposes and may be subject to change. The list is valid for 6 months and may be extended.
