Job Description Under general administrative direction, manages and directs the activities of professional and technical engineering, architecture, and/or landscape architecture personnel performing highly technical and administrative functions in connection with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of projects and systems.

Directing, supervising, and coordinating the design of complex engineering, architecture, or landscape architecture projects.

Conducting interviews, selecting, training, monitoring, and evaluating departmental staff and consultants.

Planning, organizing, and directing the administration and management of contracts.

Overseeing and reviewing the preparation of complex construction contracts and documents.

Establishing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, and administrative directives.

Managing projects and coordinating activities between units and other groups.

Consulting with technical staff, conducting meetings, and representing the City.

Writing, reviewing, and approving documents.

Supervising the review of shop drawings by contractors and field inspection staff.

Performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Seven (7) years verifiable professional engineering work experience (e.g., civil, electrical, mechanical, sanitary/chemical/environmental, transportation/traffic, or structural), of which four (4) years must be as a licensed professional engineer in the specialty you are applying for. Two (2) of the seven (7) years must be equivalent to the City and County of San Francisco class 5241 Engineer in the specialty you are applying for.

Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or Environmental Engineering.

Notes: some engineering positions may require a certificate issued by ICBO or ICC or equivalent; some positions may require additional licensing or experience in areas such as Construction Management, Structural Design, Corrosion, Fire Protection, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental, or Instrumentation and Control Systems. Most positions require a valid California Driver's License.

Substitutions for Engineering Specialties: a Master's Degree may substitute for 1 year of experience; a PhD may substitute for 2 years.

Out-of-state applicants: if not licensed in California, may file for examination and be placed under waiver until the California license is obtained.

Working Conditions Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; exposure to outdoor conditions; working in high places and confined spaces; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods. May require weekend, holiday, night, or overtime schedules.

The questionnaire helps evaluate minimum qualifications and determines final score and rank on the eligible list/score report. The duration of the eligible list is 6 months and may be extended with approval.
