About the Role:
In this role, you’ll apply your strategic and analytical skills supporting our credit card rewards and benefits programs, which span across the Premium Products & Experiences (PPX) and Card businesses. You’ll be a key player advising on the team’s mission to develop, offer and deliver industry-leading credit card rewards and benefits that provide unique and differentiated value to our customers. You’ll partner with the business on strategy and brainstorming, learn about and deeply understand the rewards team’s initiatives, investigate and assess the legal, operational and business risks, and advise on different features and customer experiences.
You’ll also have the opportunity to learn and partner with a bright, collaborative and dynamic group of attorneys who support the broader Premium Products and Experiences business line, as well as build working relationships across the Card Legal team and the Legal department. And you’ll work in a collaborative, supportive environment that values your insights, promotes continuous learning, and rewards creative thinking.
To succeed in this Director, Assistant General Counsel role, you’ll need strong legal and business analytical skills. Written and oral communication skills also are key, as is the ability to efficiently and effectively organize thoughts on legal risk, focusing on what matters in driving business initiatives forward responsibly. It’s a real plus if you have expertise in or significant experience with consumer financial regulatory laws, marketing and advertising laws, and/or general risk management.
This position will report to a Vice President, Senior Associate General Counsel and will have responsibility for:
Identifying and assessing legal risks associated with Capital One’s rewards and benefits programs, part of the Premium Products and Experiences line of business;
Knowing your business in depth, allowing you to translate and apply laws and legal requirements for the business teams and the business intent for the legal team and legal subject matter experts;
Actively engaging with colleagues to provide legal support as part of a collaborative and cross-functional team; and
Working with the PPX and Card businesses, Brand, the Business Risk Office, Corporate Communications, and Compliance stakeholders to address risks, develop creative solutions, and resolve issues.
This position will entail regular interactions with senior business partners, Legal Department subject matter experts, and other business attorneys in a fast-paced environment.
Basic Qualifications:
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school Active member in good standing of at least one state bar At least 6 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel Preferred Qualifications:
7+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency, ideally involving consumer financial services, regulatory counseling, or the fintech industry Ability to work in a dynamic environment and flexibility to adapt to changing needs 5+ years people management experience Ability to build collegial and effective relationships with attorneys, business managers, creative teams, analysts, project managers, and corporate compliance professionals, and work cooperatively to resolve issues smoothly Ability to prioritize work and to manage multiple, simultaneous deadlines Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others Capital One is an equal opportunity employer (EOE, including disability/vet) committed to non-discrimination in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.
