Manager, OPO Organ Procurement

University of Miami . The Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA) has an exciting opportunity for a Manager, OPO Organ Procurement position. The function of LAORA is to obtain organs for clinical transplantation throughout South Florida and transport them to transplant centers within the U.S. LAORA procures an average of 450 organs per year from over 80 donor hospitals in its area of certification. The position is responsible for the direct supervision of Donor Management Coordinator staff and reports to the Sr. Director, Clinical Operations. Candidates should be health care professionals with experience in Critical Care (ER or ICU), or foreign trained physicians with advanced life support experience or other professionals who can demonstrate a solid background in the care and treatment of the critically ill. CPTC certification and organ procurement experience are required.
Responsibilities
Clinical:
Supervise the donor management coordinator (DMC) staff in all clinical aspects of the donation process to ensure adherence to LAORA policy and procedures, regulatory agency standards, and industry best practices.
Provide DMC staff with guidance on clinical donor management to keep patients stable while maximizing the number of organs procured per consented donor.
Perform a clinical, independent assessment of potential brain-dead and non-heart-beating donors to ensure donor meets medical criteria for donation, and guide OPC staff with plan of action.
Formulate and implement donor maintenance plans in collaboration with hospital staff and on-site DMC to preserve transplantable organs.
Perform Administrator On-Call (AOC) and Leadership On-Call (LOC) shifts as assigned.
Administrative:
Analyze, strategize, and implement methods to improve performance among Donor Management Staff as needed.
Complete donor-related documentation in LAORA on-line database and/or donor chart while interacting with DMC staff to maintain accurate case records.
Ensure legal and regulatory requirements are met in the organ/tissue procurement process by providing guidance to DMC staff.
Maintain and enforce standards among DMC staff established by regulatory agencies on a case-by-case basis.
Collaborate with Quality Assurance to improve operational practices based on data analysis.
Supervisory:
Prepare DMC staff on-call schedules monthly to ensure adequate coverage and equitable workload distribution.
Assign Clinical Development activities to DMC staff in collaboration with Hospital Services, including Death Record Reviews, clinical in-services, and hospital visits.
Oversee day-to-day operations of DMC staff in the LAORA donor service area and ensure donor/referral information is submitted to Quality Assurance as required.
Lead bi-monthly staff meetings to communicate operational changes and updates.
Ensure prompt and accurate communication of memos, data, or pertinent information to all PCs within the donor service area.
Evaluate performance and provide additional training to DMC staff as needed.
Educational/Hospital Services:
Support grief-stricken families of potential organ donors and coordinate After-Care Programs.
Collaborate with Hospital Services to maintain relationships with hospital personnel for promotion of organ donation and procurement, including policy revisions and education.
Provide technical assistance for educational packages to promote organ donation among the public.
Coordinate with Hospital Services staff to dispatch personnel for Clinical Development events and engage with hospital administration as needed.
Participate in physician/community education related to organ donor awareness.
Assign DMC staff to community seminars and workshops as needed and provide ongoing DMC training.

Education and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with RN license, or a foreign-trained physician with over 5 years of critical care experience.
Minimum of 3 years of management experience.
Minimum of 3 years of experience as an organ procurement coordinator.
CPTC certification required.
