Overview
Interim Executive Director at Howard University. The interim director will provide day-to-day leadership for all Center for Journalism & Democracy (CJD) staff while a permanent Executive Director search is conducted, and will operationalize the vision of the Founding Director across Howard University and campus partners at various HBCUs. The position reports to the Founding Director and is responsible for implementing and overseeing Center programs, supervising staff, and guiding the team to fulfill the Center’s mission: to bolster the field of journalism in service of multiracial democracy by supporting teaching and practice of historically informed investigative reporting at Howard University and across HBCUs. Responsibilities
Provide strategic, holistic, high-level oversight and direction for the Center Collaborate with the Chief of Staff and Business Manager to manage grant spending and tracking for the CJD major grant portfolio Supervise development and monitoring of grant proposal budgets and grant reports, ensuring alignment with the University advancement team and grant accounting offices Collaborate with division heads to create budgets for programming Lead Center staff and directors in developing and implementing programs with alignment across the Center’s strategic pillars Identify and pursue strategic partnerships within and outside the university Develop and execute fundraising campaigns in partnership with the Development Manager Represent the Center externally as a spokesperson in public, professional, and community activities Foster an inclusive and productive team culture and provide opportunities for professional development Ensure work aligns with the Founding Director’s vision and is completed in a timely, fiscally responsible manner Set clear, measurable goals and develop systems to evaluate progress Lead the development and launch of new projects as appropriate for the Center Perform other duties as assigned Supervisory Authority and Nature & Scope
Supervisory Authority:
Responsible for supervising multiple functions within a department, planning, directing, and coordinating work; may perform some non-supervisory duties; conducts staff evaluations and makes pay/performance recommendations. Nature And Scope:
Internal contacts with executives, administrators, faculty, students, and staff; external contacts include alumni, consultants, other colleges and universities, visitors, and the general public. Core Competencies
At least 10 years of experience leading and managing a team of 10+ individuals Ability to organize and unite a team around common, measurable goals Familiarity with journalism and investigative reporting; journalism experience preferred Proven success managing multiple, complex, high-profile projects Experience in a high-growth/startup environment Fundraising experience Experience developing systems and processes to implement a high-level vision Budget management experience, including philanthropic funds Proven ability to navigate partnerships across large, complex organizations Willingness to give and receive direct feedback Passion for working with students and HBCUs Ability to prepare timely reports and correspondence; detail-oriented and organized Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software Strong oral and written communication with diverse populations; maintain confidentiality Ability to foster collaborative work across functions, levels, and departments Experience navigating policy requirements at an academic institution Minimum Requirements
Advanced degree (Master’s, JD, LLM, Ph.D. or equivalent) and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. Compliance Salary Range Disclosure Expected Salary Range: $140,000 - $160,000 Job Details
