Overview
The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks a Research Project Manager (RPM) to support the Center's new Data Privacy Lab. The Lab explores how privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) can enable data sharing, research, and innovation in LMICs. Through real-world collaborations, the Lab will develop and deploy PETs and create a privacy playbook to assist organizations in applying PETs in practice. Responsibilities
Data Privacy Research Management: coordinate research activities and lead study partner relations for multiple projects involving PETs in data-intensive LMIC settings. Responsibilities include managing high-stakes partnerships, negotiating partnerships/MOUs, and serving as a bridge between partners, researchers, and the CEGA network. Oversee general project management of the Data Privacy Lab, coordinating contributions from multiple research staff and working in close collaboration with the supervisor. Organize and develop agendas for weekly research team meetings, share updates, support recruiting and onboarding of new staff in partnership with CEGA's HR, and potentially provide mentorship for professional growth. Identify opportunities for project expansion through strategic collaboration and fundraising. Assist in drafting proposals, reports, documents, analyses, and presentations for fundraising, donor reporting, and dissemination. Collaborate with the research team, partners, and CEGA's communications team to translate research into blogs, policy briefs, website content, and audiovisual outputs. Contribute to writing/editing papers for scientific publication in leading CS and mathematics venues. Data Privacy Lab/Programmatic Administration: lead financial management and pre/post award support for the Lab, including developing budgets, managing grants and funding, reporting, contract navigation, and fundraising support, in collaboration with CEGA's Operations team. Manage subawards/other agreements, including documentation, scopes of work, monitoring, payments/invoicing, and ensuring adherence to regulations, human subjects protocols, and reporting requirements. Provide operational support to the Lab, including contracting with partners/vendors, managing events, scheduling, and reporting. Plan and manage all Lab events (logistics, budgeting, calls for nominations/papers, outreach, and reimbursements) with support from CEGA's Communications and Events team. New Initiative Development: contribute to CEGA initiatives related to data privacy, steward relationships with faculty, policymakers, and donors; identify fundraising opportunities; contribute to concept notes and proposals; organize panels and networking events; and support cross-project coordination. Coordinate with CEGA staff and research teams to facilitate cross-project learning and leverage synergies across the portfolio. Center-wide Activities: help update and promote privacy-preserving and ethical practices; participate in center-wide activities including weekly staff meetings, retreats, SOPs, recruitment, onboarding, and performance management. Required Qualifications
Professional experience and/or coursework in quantitative research methods (mathematics, statistics, econometrics, or engineering). Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training. Preferred Qualifications
Experience with research and engineering teams using state-of-the-art technologies. Familiarity with at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java), a database language (SQL), and privacy-enhancing technologies (e.g., differential privacy, homomorphic encryption, secure multiparty computation, private set intersection, zero-knowledge proofs). Self-directed and motivated; ability to manage multiple projects independently and meet deadlines. Well-organized with strong administrative skills and attention to detail. Strategic planning and problem-solving skills; strong customer service orientation. Excellent written and oral communication; ability to translate complex content for diverse audiences. Experience working or living in low- and middle-income countries. Demonstrated experience managing colleagues at all levels with superb interpersonal skills. Ability to adapt to unstructured, rapidly changing environments with a positive attitude. Experience with grants management, financial oversight, budgeting, and pre/post award processes. Commitment to research transparency, ethics, and evidence-led international development policy and capacity strengthening in LMICs. Master's degree with coursework in quantitative research methods or equivalent experience. Salary & Benefits
Base pay range: $81,150.00/yr - $109,200.00/yr. The posted range reflects California law requirements and is subject to experience, skills, knowledge, and internal equity considerations. This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
