Superintendent of Schools Position Overview The School Committee invites applications for the position of Superintendent of Schools. The Superintendent serves as the chief executive officer of the district and is responsible for providing visionary leadership, effective management, and a culture of continuous improvement that ensures every student achieves at high levels. About the District The Harvard Public Schools serve approximately 1,000 students from PreK through Grade 12 in the town of Harvard, Massachusetts. The district comprises Hildreth Elementary School (PreK–5) and The Bromfield School (Grades 6–12), both of which are highly regarded for their academic excellence, strong community involvement, and commitment to educating the whole child. The district is supported by engaged families, dedicated educators, and a community that values education, collaboration, and innovation. Harvard is a historic, rural-suburban community in central Massachusetts with a tradition of academic achievement and civic pride. Responsibilities Instructional Leadership Provide clear vision, high expectations, and strategic direction for curriculum, instruction, and assessment across the district. Ensure teaching and learning are coherent, rigorous, and evidence-based, supporting both academic and social-emotional development of all students. Use data effectively to monitor student progress, identify and close achievement gaps, and promote equitable access and outcomes. Supervise, evaluate, and support principals and school leaders to foster instructional excellence and student success. Management and Operations Develop and manage district systems for budgeting, staffing, scheduling, and resources to ensure efficiency, equity, and transparency. Establish and maintain safe, supportive, and inclusive school environments for students and staff. Recruit, hire, and retain high-quality personnel while fostering a professional culture of collaboration, accountability, and growth. Oversee facilities, technology, and operations to support district goals and student learning. Family and Community Engagement Communicate effectively and responsively with families, staff, the School Committee, and the wider community. Engage families as partners in student learning and district improvement. Build collaborative, trusting relationships with municipal leaders and community organizations to support the district’s mission and goals. Professional Culture Model integrity, fairness, cultural proficiency, and a deep commitment to equity. Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive professional culture where staff feel supported, valued, and motivated to improve. Demonstrate reflective practice, using evidence and feedback to strengthen leadership and decision-making. Performance Expectations The Superintendent will be evaluated annually by the School Committee in alignment with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Superintendent Evaluation Rubric. Performance will be assessed across the four DESE standards: 1. Instructional Leadership – improving teaching and learning for all students. 2. Management and Operations – ensuring effective systems, resources, and safe learning environments. 3. Family and Community Engagement – building strong partnerships and responsive communication. 4. Professional Culture – modeling equity, integrity, and reflective practice. Qualifications Master’s degree in education or related field (Doctorate preferred). Massachusetts license as Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent. Demonstrated success in educational leadership, including raising student achievement and fostering equity. Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and school improvement strategies. (teaching experience preferred) Proven expertise in organizational management, budgeting, and personnel administration. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Salary and Contract The Harvard School Committee will offer a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications. The superintendent will be employed under a multi-year contract, with specific terms to be negotiated with the School Committee in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws.
