Overview

Phlebotomist role at WVU Hospitals — Ruby Memorial Hospital. Performs phlebotomy (the practice of entering a vein to draw blood) services on inpatients and outpatients, as requested by physicians, in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.

Minimum qualifications

  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: Completion of a phlebotomy education program or an allied health education program that includes phlebotomy education and a minimum of 50 successful unaided venipunctures.

Preferred qualifications

  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
    • Qualification to perform phlebotomy by one or more of the following criteria: Certified as a phlebotomist by AMT, NCA or ASCP.
    • Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program.
    • Completion of a phlebotomy education program that includes 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection.
    • Completion of an accredited allied health professional/occupation education program which includes phlebotomy training and completion of 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection.

Experience

  • Phlebotomy experience in a hospital or clinic setting.

Core duties and responsibilities

  • Performs blood collection in a timely manner using established laboratory guidelines to acquire acceptable specimens.
  • Follows standard operating procedures to perform basic diagnostic procedures and produce accurate results.
  • Operates basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer system, tube transport system, timers) in accordance with SOPs.
  • Restocks supplies to support co-workers and maintain workflow.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient care requirements for all age groups as required by SOPs.
  • Manages time and resources to provide efficient patient care.
  • Collects patient specimens promptly to reduce wastage and delays, per SOPs.
  • Completes assigned workload within established time frames and monitors turnaround times.
  • Maintains effective communication with laboratory sections, administration, coworkers, patients, and other departments.
  • Answers the telephone promptly and courteously, identifying self and unit.
  • Participates in staff meetings, trainings, and ongoing communications, applying new information to routines.
  • Alerts supervisor to unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to expedite ordering.
  • Refers technical problems or unusual patient occurrences to supervisor or nursing staff.
  • Contacts nursing staff and/or ordering providers promptly for clarification of unclear or incomplete test requisitions; requests new requisitions as per policies.
  • Notifies patient care units of uncollected specimens to expedite results.
  • Communicates information to patients and/or the public before, during, and after procedures as needed.
  • Performs basic clerical duties to support laboratory operations.
  • Enters laboratory tests into computer systems accurately and ensures specimens are properly labeled and requisitions completed.
  • Assists hospital personnel in obtaining laboratory results and directs them to the appropriate area when needed.
  • Resubmits improperly labeled specimens or incomplete requisitions promptly to ensure accurate testing.
  • Participates in educational endeavors and training of residents, students, and other healthcare professionals per policies.
  • Engages in ongoing continuing education and department training as dictated by needs.
  • Participates in training, supervision, and evaluation of new employees as established by policies.

Physical requirements

  • Heavy/Hard work: stamina, moving, stooping, bending, reaching, standing, pushing (cart), lifting and loading supplies, and walking.
