Responsibilities
- Performs phlebotomy (the practice of entering a vein to draw blood) services on inpatients and outpatients, as requested by physicians, in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
- Performs, in a timely manner, blood collection using established laboratory guidelines designed to acquire acceptable specimens used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to meet the needs of patients, as requested by the ordering provider.
- Follows standard operating procedures to perform basic diagnostic procedures to produce accurate results.
- Operates basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer system, tube transport system, timers) consistent with standard operating procedures.
- Restocks, as required, the work area of needed supplies to assist co‑workers in the performance of their duties.
- Demonstrates knowledge of patient care requirements for all age groups as required by laboratory procedures, after receiving instruction and training.
- Utilizes time, materials, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing and arranging workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
- Collects patient specimens promptly to reduce wastage and delays, in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Completes assigned workload within established time frames by adjusting workload organization as needed.
- Maintains effective communication with laboratory staff, administrative office, coworkers, patients and other departments to resolve problems and support patient care.
- Answers telephone promptly and courteously, identifying self and unit.
- Participates in staff activities and keeps current in communications, incorporating new information into routine use.
- Communicates unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the supervisor to expedite ordering of supplies.
- Refers technical problems or unusual patient occurrences to supervisor or nursing staff as appropriate.
- Notifies nursing staff and/or ordering provider promptly for clarification of unclear or incomplete test requisitions/orders and requests new requisitions/orders as per policy.
- Notifies patient care units of uncollected specimens to expedite accurate test results.
- Communicates information to patients and/or the public before, during and after designated procedures.
- Performs basic clerical duties to support laboratory operations.
- Completes computer entry of laboratory tests with properly labeled specimens and requisitions in accordance with policy.
- Assists hospital personnel in obtaining laboratory results and guides them to appropriate areas as needed.
- Resubmits improperly labeled specimens or incomplete requisitions promptly to expedite accurate testing.
- Participates in educational activities to meet current and future needs of the phlebotomy service and hospital.
- Participates in training, supervision, and evaluation of residents and students as established by policy.
- Participates in continuing education and in services as dictated by needs.
- Participates, as required, in training, supervision and evaluation of new employees in line with laboratory policies.
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a phlebotomy education program or an allied health education program including phlebotomy education and a minimum of 50 successful unaided venipunctures.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Qualification to perform phlebotomy by one or more of the following criteria:
- Certified as a phlebotomist by AMT, NCA or ASCP.
- Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program.
- Completion of a phlebotomy education program that includes 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection.
- Completion of an accredited allied health program including phlebotomy training with 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection.
- Experience
- Phlebotomy experience in a hospital or clinic setting.
