This is a full-time position with responsibilities centered on plasma collection from donors, ensuring donor safety and product quality in compliance with SOPs and applicable regulations.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- In compliance with SOPs, perform all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set-up, donor monitoring and donor disconnect.
- In compliance with SOPs and FDA guidelines, perform venipuncture on donors to begin the pheresis process.
- Evaluate vein performance of the donor to identify possible problems; make necessary corrections to expedite donation time, ensure product quality and donor safety, and adjust the process to provide a positive donor experience.
- Educate new donors on the use of therapeutic products made from donated plasma as applicable; explain the screening process, health screening tests, appointment system, center policies, proper nutrition and any other information pertinent to the donor. Ensure donor questions are answered timely, accurately and professionally.
- Maintain alertness to donor reactions and assist with reactions or notify appropriate staff.
- Use a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents during the pheresis process, including machine alerts, alarms, volume variances and donor adverse events.
- Perform calibrations and verify maintenance as outlined in SOPs; respond to and resolve complex equipment alarms or donor issues.
- Troubleshoot equipment failures; create incident documentation and manage equipment from service as needed.
- Monitor donor flow on the donor floor to assure continuous turnover and alert Group Leader or Supervisor of donor flow issues.
- Collect arm samples or whole blood samples from donors for testing.
- Ensure accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system as outlined in the SOPs.
- Understand policies and procedures associated with hyper immune programs at the center if applicable.
- Maintain a clean, efficient work environment and ensure sufficient operating supplies and forms are available; follow Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures; promote safety in all actions.
- Maintain confidentiality of all personnel, donor and center information.
- May be cross-trained in other areas to meet business needs; bilingual skills may be required, at the organization’s discretion.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum twelve (12) months experience in a medical or health care environment preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- For Centers located in CA, additional experience or qualifications: persons performing automated plasmapheresis procedures must be at a minimum state certified as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, OR current Registered Nurse by the State of California.
