Overview

Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and within hospital and department policies and procedures, assists in caring for patients and/or families from admission to discharge. A nursing assistant is a paraprofessional trained to provide personal care and related health care and assistance to individuals who are sick, disabled, or infirm, who are residents of or receiving services from health care facilities or agencies licensed by the state and holds a license as a nursing assistant issued by the Department of Health. Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to organize work and set priorities.
  • Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, perform:
    • Personal Care Skills
    • Basic Nursing Assistant Skills as outlined by the Rhode Island Department of Health Professional Licensing and Facility Regulation
    • Rehabilitation Skills: daily activities of living, ambulation as appropriate
    • Maintenance of Safe Environment: report unsafe conditions and equipment in need of repair
    • Recognition of and Reporting Signs and Symptoms: communicate pertinent patient observations to the Registered Nurse
    • Safety: maintain quality assurance and infection control per policies; accurately document data in the EHR; participate in emergency/code situations
    • May function as a patient observer
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Rhode Island license as a Nursing Assistant
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Ability to perform basic computer skills
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Knowledge and skills to provide care to patients across the life span with regard to aging, development, and cultural considerations

Experience

  • One-year experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred

Work Environment and Physical Conditions

  • Healthcare settings including acute care hospitals, physicians’ offices, and related enterprises
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking; repeated bending, squatting, and stooping
  • May be required to lift/turn patients and equipment

Independent Action

Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse within hospital and department policies and Rhode Island regulations; refers complex problems to supervisor as needed.

None.

Compensation and Employment Details

  • Pay Range: $17.00 - $25.31
  • Location: The Miriam Hospital, 164 Summit Ave, Providence, RI 02906
  • Work Type: 24-hour monthly requirement, 16 hours weekend, 1 major 1 minor holiday
  • Work Shift: Variable
  • Daily Hours: Per Diem – As required
  • Driving Required: No
