Position Summary: Must be able to work weekend rotation schedule. The laboratory assistant obtains and processes clinical specimens for testing and performs various clerical duties in the clinical laboratory. Assigned job duties are performed independently, and he/she assists other personnel in the operation of the laboratory. He delivers reports to nursing units and communicates with the responsible healthcare providers via mail, telephone, and fax. He/ she is under the supervision of the Phlebotomy Supervisor and Administrative Director, Laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and process clinical specimens for testing and perform various clerical duties in the clinical laboratory.
  • Perform assigned duties independently and assist other personnel in laboratory operations.
  • Deliver reports to nursing units and communicate with healthcare providers via mail, telephone, and fax.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to work weekend rotation schedule
  • Shift: 8 hours
  • Valid Certified Phlebotomy Technician certificate issued by the state of California Department of Health Services
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System

Preferred Qualifications

  • Acute care hospital experience
  • Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms

Physical requirements

  • Visual and acuity
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
  • Sitting, standing, and walking for most tasks
  • Ability to lift and carry light loads < 25 pounds
  • Ability to work with various electronic and mechanical instruments and chemicals which can be hazardous if mishandled
