BASIC FUNCTION
Under direction of an assigned supervisor, maintain assigned classrooms, buildings, offices and facilities in a clean and orderly condition according to clearly defined schedules and established procedures.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in the Custodian I class perform custodial duties involving cleaning and routine maintenance at an assigned school or site. In addition to performing custodial work and a variety of general maintenance duties, incumbents in the Custodian II class provide custodial services at multiple sites independently or are assigned lead duties at a single school site. The Custodian III class is a single position class assigned to train and provide work direction to custodians at the high school. This class is distinguished from lower-level custodians by the complexity of duties resulting from the broader variety of classes, programs, activities and special events at a high school facility.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide day-to-day custodial care of classrooms, buildings, offices and facilities at assigned locations according to established schedules.
- Wash windows, walls, tables, desks and benches; polish metal work; clean chalk boards; dust and clean furniture and polish wood work; sweep, scrub, mop and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas.
- Clean and sanitize rest rooms; wash sinks, mirrors and toilets; empty trash receptacles; refill soap, towel and other dispensers.
- Communicate with administrators and faculty regarding special custodial needs and security of facilities; maintain routine records related to work performed; request supplies and cleaning materials according to established procedures.
- Move, set up and arrange furniture and equipment as requested.
- Ensure windows, doors and gates are locked and report incidents of vandalism and theft.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting desks and furniture, and making minor adjustments to equipment.
- Operate a variety of custodial equipment including a floor stripper, buffer, carpet shampooer, vacuum cleaner, and small power and hand tools; drive a light truck as assigned.
- Remove graffiti from walls and walkways; pick up papers and debris; sweep walks; empty and clean garbage and trash receptacles.
- Provide work direction to student workers as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES
- Assist in special grounds maintenance projects and seasonal cleaning projects as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor environment; subject to regular exposure to dust, fumes and odors.
- PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Standing and walking for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, pushing and pulling cleaning equipment, lifting, carrying, and moving furniture and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and reaching overhead and horizontally to replace light bulbs.
EDUCATION
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and education needed to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed above.
EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to: one year of custodian experience.
Completion of a Janitorial/Custodian course of at least 160 hours of instruction at an accredited Adult or ROP institution or its equivalent may be substituted for one year of custodian experience.

SCREENING PROCESS
2 - Applications will be screened to select the most qualified candidates. The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of a(n): application screening, initial qualifications screening, documentation/certification screening, and supplemental application screening. EXAMINATION PROCESS
3 - The examination plan will consist of:
- Written Exam (40% of final score) - October 22, 2025
- Performance Exam (60% of final score) - November 7, 2025

The examination may consist of any combination of: training and experience (T&E) evaluation, written knowledge test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on an eligibility list.

EXAM PROTESTS
Protest of any part of the exam process must be in writing and submitted to the Personnel Director no later than five (5) working days from the date you participated in the exam. Protests must include rationale and supporting documentation. Protests should not be based on receiving unexpected results. We cannot be responsible for lost mail or delivery issues.
ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY
Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list expires after one (1) year. Eligibility lists may be extended, expire sooner, or be merged; ranks may change accordingly.
SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties, so more than three candidates may be called. Candidates may be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times.
OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT
Official offers are made by the Bassett Unified School District Personnel Commission office and are subject to satisfactory completion of all pre-employment processing including drug test, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT
All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range for the class. Initial placement is normally at the first step, but advanced step placement may be approved. Requests for advanced step must be submitted in writing before the first day of work. Criteria include: additional qualifying experience, related education, or evidence of currently earning a salary greater than the first step.
