Overview
Recreation Assistant (Fitness) at Navy Region Naval District Washington Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR). The primary function of the position is to ensure proper usage of the facility, assist in the operation of the recreation activity and provide proper collection and disposition of revenues generated at the assigned facility.
Responsibilities
- Administrative Support (includes but not limited to): Provide customer service to patrons using the facility, greeting customers; checking identification cards to ensure only authorized users are entering the facility; issuing and receiving gear/equipment; and registering patrons for facility use, events, and/or classes.
- Answer telephone with information regarding facility hours, upcoming events and programs.
- Complete Daily Activity Reports.
- Assist in planning, scheduling, and publicizing activities and maintaining related supplies to attract and motivate participants.
- Oversee sale of retail items associated with activities.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) fitness activities based on participant responses, resources, and program objectives.
- Monitor patrons, volunteers and contractors and report issues to management.
- Assist in selecting fitness, sports, and aquatics activities offered, within required basic categories and additional ones possible through available resources and participant needs.
- Instructional Support (includes but not limited to): Monitor assigned participants in indoor and outdoor activities, including intramural sporting events.
- Conduct instructional classes in the assigned recreation area.
- Perform basic fitness orientation; identify and correct unsafe fitness techniques.
- Demonstrate procedures and instruct in the use of related equipment.
- Establish and review event schedules; conduct tours; set up gymnasiums/facilities/fields prior to scheduled start times.
- Ensure adherence to regulations and safety procedures.
- Facility/Equipment Maintenance (includes but not limited to):
- Open/close facility and playing fields at posted times; monitor and check premises security.
- Circulate among patrons to assist with equipment use and maintain order.
- Maintain athletic playing surfaces in safe, ready-to-play condition.
- Clean and maintain equipment and facilities; manage inventory; perform janitorial tasks to keep spaces clean and orderly.
- Make minor repairs when appropriate and assist with outdoor maintenance.
- Report maintenance problems or unsafe conditions that cannot be repaired in-house to the supervisor.
Requirements
- Must pass E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
- Must have salary sent to a financial institution by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
- Must have or obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications within 30 days of hire.
- Must have or obtain and maintain Automated External Defibrillator, Blood-borne Pathogen, and Navy Basic Fitness Certification within 90 days of hire.
- Selectee may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
Qualifications
Knowledge of MWR policies, rules, and regulations; knowledge of basic arithmetic to compute charges, disperse change, and prepare reports; knowledge of cash handling procedures; knowledge of basic fitness, aquatics and sports principles; knowledge of safe use and operation of fitness equipment and maintenance/repair; skills in Microsoft Office programs; ability to provide fitness, aquatics and sports training or orientation; ability to carry out day-to-day recreation operations; ability to develop and deliver presentations or training; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Salary is dependent on experience and/or education. Some positions have special requirements. Spouse preference may apply in certain cases; submit appropriate forms and PCS orders if requesting preference. May include travel and travel card requirements. Federal drug-free workplace policy applies. SELECTIVE SERVICE REQUIREMENT: Males born after 12/31/1959 must register with the Selective Service System where applicable.
