Job Description

The Department of Kinesiology at UMass Amherst invites applications for a full-time, academic year (nine months), Lecturer faculty position to contribute and assist in the delivery of our undergraduate and graduate curricula with a focus in either biomechanics, movement neuroscience, or exercise physiology. With the support of the department mentoring program, the successful candidate will be able to teach 400 and 500 level courses in biomechanics, movement neuroscience, or exercise physiology. The candidate would also contribute to the expansion of the curriculum in the areas of sports performance, technology and data science.

The successful candidate will work within a dynamic department to deliver student-centered learning experiences using a variety of instructional approaches including interactive lectures, engaging classroom activities, laboratory instruction and design, and team-based learning approaches. This role emphasizes excellence in teaching, mentorship, and curriculum development within a collaborative and inclusive academic environment. The course load is equivalent to 3-4 courses per semester, with adjustments for large class sizes and assigned service work. Service work may include participating on department, school, and university committees, as assigned by the department chair.

Our department has a strong mentoring program for new faculty to support onboarding to teach the curriculum and help build exceptional teaching skills. This is supported by the following University programs including the Center for Teaching and Learning ( CTL ), Instructional Design, Engagement, and Support ( IDEAS ), Office of Faculty Development ( OFD ), and the SPHHS Teaching Academy. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to building diverse and effective collaborations are positively considered. Lecturer faculty play a critical role in fulfilling the teaching mission of the department.

Requirements

Graduate degree in kinesiology, exercise science, data analytics, or a related field

Ph.D. degree or M.S. degree and 2+ years of relevant experience in pedagogical, clinical, research, sports performance or industry settings

Ability to deliver student-centered learning experiences using a variety of instructional approaches including interactive lectures, engaging classroom activities, laboratory instruction and design, and team-based learning approaches

Content expertise in one of the following: data analytics, advanced exercise physiology, biomechanics, movement neuroscience, or other potential areas that will add to the strengths of the department

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants for their assigned courses

Previous teaching experience as instructor on record for academic course with the potential for excellent teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level

Evidence of graduate level teaching and curriculum development
