Summary Responsible for leading structural analysis on advanced engineering projects (large radome installation, interior reconfigurations, etc.), performing and documenting structural engineering, testing analyses and substantiation required to support the installation design and certification of technology onboard commercial aircraft. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Actively assists project management and engineering team in solving internal and external analysis-related challenges

Subject matter expert in the aircraft structure discipline with a focus in a structural concentration such as Fatigue, Composites, Material Science, or Mechanical Systems

Lead and mentor junior or associate level engineers on structural analysis

Coordinate analysis engineering vendors for outsourced analysis work such as CFD, dynamic simulations, etc.

Responsible for development and review of relevant structural analysis documentation and compliance required on advanced engineering projects

Primary reviewer for analysis documentation on engineering projects, particularly within their structural concentration

Review installation design at both preliminary and critical design review stages to provide inputs to design based on preliminary stress analysis

Develop stress analysis models, utilize existing structural analysis tools (such as FEMAP), and/or perform hand calculations to substantiate the structural integrity of installation designs with oversight from FAA designees

Develop fatigue and damage tolerance evaluations for installation designs using hand calculations and/or analysis tools (such as AFGROW)

Document structural analyses and fatigue assessments in Structural Substantiation Reports and Damage Tolerance Evaluation Reports

Develop basic cooling analyses using hand calculations to substantiate to specific cooling requirements and document in Cooling Substantiation Reports

Perform and document weight and balance analyses to substantiate the weight and balance impact of the installed system then document in Weight and Balance Change Reports

Develop test plans and reports in support of structural and/or cooling substantiation

This position may require knowledge of SOX / 404 internal audit controls and related documentation.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience

Required: Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or in a related technical and/or equivalent field.

At least 6 years of experience (or 4 years of experience and a Masters Degree) in aviation/aerospace or similar industry

At least 1 years of experience working with FAA Part 21 regulations

Strong technical writing techniques including outlining regulations and/or requirements and detailing substantiation of them

Strong analytic problem solving capabilities

Direct experience working in a engineering/technical organization with strict document control processes and procedures and the ability to adhere to them

Familiarity with commercial aircraft structures (or a similar field, such as automotive)

Preferred: Masters Degree and/or experience in Structural or Composites Engineering

Direct experience with electro-mechanical systems

FAA DER/DAR qualifications

Experience with finite element software and solvers: FEMAP, NASTRAN, or similar

Experience with crack growth simulation software: AFGROW

At least 2 years of experience working with FAA Part 21 regulations

At least 4 years of experience working with structures or mechanical equipment in aerospace or a similar field, such as automotive

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints, product and component specifications, data sheets and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively communicate technical details, design concepts, analysis results, and substantiation via verbal or written mediums. Ability to contribute to technical discussions before groups of customers and/or employees. Mathematical Skills

Ability to read and interpret figures, graphs and plots. Ability to solve algebraic, geometry and calculus-based problems. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to apply mathematical concepts to solve engineering and technical problems. Ability to manage, organize, analyze and decipher large amounts of data. Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical, technical and engineering problems via a logical, analytic approach. Ability to simplify complicated problems using assumptions. Ability to validate work using verification techniques. Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of electronic equipment. Additionally, intermediate PC skills and knowledge of Internet and Microsoft Office applications are required. Computer experience/operation is necessary. Other Skills and Abilities

The salary range specified is applicable to positions within the State of Illinois and reflects various factors considered in compensation decisions. These factors include, but are not limited to, individual skill sets, experience, training, licensure, certifications, and the specific needs of our business and organization. At Astronics CSC, it is uncommon for new hires to receive an offer at or near the top end of the range for their role. Compensation decisions are made based on the unique facts and circumstances of each candidate. The current estimated yearly salary range for this position is $86,430 to $129,645 per year.
