Analog Photonics
Analog Photonics is a Boston-based silicon photonics company developing high-performance photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that enable disruptive advances in automotive LiDAR, optical communications, consumer electronics, and defense systems.
At Analog Photonics, you will find not only a fast-paced environment driving world-leading solid-state LiDAR systems and advanced communication links, but also an environment that encourages you to develop multiple skill sets across design, simulation, fabrication, packaging, and testing.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Silicon Photonics Layout Engineer to support our photonic IC layout efforts, develop next-generation layout automation infrastructure and maintain our silicon photonics PDK. In this role, you will help build and maintain layout libraries, contribute to full-reticle tapeouts, and develop reusable and parameterized layout tools using modern, Python-based frameworks.
You’ll work closely with photonic designers, test engineers, packaging teams, and foundry partners to help scale up our internal design workflows and ensure high-quality, manufacturable layouts.
Key Responsibilities
Generate photonic integrated circuit (PIC) layouts using modern Python-based layout tools (e.g., KLayout, GDSFactory)
Develop and maintain parameterized layout components (PCells) and reusable circuit blocks
Assemble and validate full-reticle layouts for commercial and internal multi-project tapeouts
Support physical verification (DRC, LVS) and implement layout quality assurance procedures
Maintain layout libraries and associated scripts with clear documentation and version control
Collaborate with photonic designers, packaging engineers, and test engineers to translate design specifications into manufacturable layouts
Work with foundries and fabrication partners to ensure compliance with process design rules and deliverables
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience
Basic understanding of photonic components, such as waveguides, couplers, grating couplers, and modulators
Experience using layout software such as KLayout, GDSFactory, Cadence Virtuoso
Scripting and automation experience in Python
Preferred Qualifications:
M.S. or Ph.D. in Photonics, Physics, EE, or related field
3+ years experience with layout generation for PICs or semiconductor workflows
Deep experience in building and managing layout libraries and parameterized cells
Familiarity with foundry PDKs, DRC rules, and physical verification (LVS, DRC, ERC)
Experience using simulation and layout tools such as Synopsys, Cadence, Lumerical
Strong version control, documentation, and team collaboration skills
