Position Overview The General Manager is responsible for leading through Petco’s vision of “Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World.” to develop a high-performing team that delivers top-line sales growth while maintaining welfare, health, and proper care of all animals. The GM leads a team of Pet Care Center managers, leaders and partners and is accountable for all aspects of managing a single Pet Care Center. The General Manager drives business through focus on people (talent acquisition, training and development), performance (guest service, sales and expense control), and process (standard operating procedures and policies), resulting in overall profitability. This position requires a passion for pets, the ability to inspire and lead a team, a focus on process excellence, and a drive for results. Position Responsibilities The GM regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment as they execute all Pet Care Center activity to create the best possible partner, guest, and pet experience. As a leader of people & pet care, the GM should execute all tasks skillfully and consistently. Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly Pet Care Center partners in all areas and functions required to run the store efficiently and to Petco standards, including the effective rollout selling models. Create a professional environment that inspires growth and engagement of partners. Lead and implement a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion and collaboration by working alongside the team, establishing priorities, and providing clear direction. Ensure quick and courteous service to all Petco guests by helping partners determine the guest’s needs and by sharing product knowledge with partners to enable them to suggest appropriate solutions. Responsible for all partner performance management in the Pet Care Center. Demonstrate and support a continuous improvement and growth mindset. Performance Meet or exceed goals related to total Pet Care Center sales, profitability, and operational excellence. Schedule and adjust labor hours & payroll to maximize productivity, achieve sales & payroll goals, and complete workload. Review and interpret financial and operational reporting regularly, including Pet Care Center visits and audit results. Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies to improve and grow the business using Petco programs, tools, and resources. Market the Pet Care Center and its products; oversee planning of onsite and community events such as adoptions, school visits and other local promotions and animal-welfare events. Process Ensure the proper health, appearance, welfare, and proper handling of all animals. Ensure merchandise is properly priced, displayed and stocked according to inventory levels; make merchandising decisions with regard to visual standards, ad setup and monthly ad planner guidelines. Complete and submit accounting, inventory management and payroll paperwork in a timely manner; ensure expenses are within budgeted levels. Maintain the Pet Care Center’s appearance and safety procedures; protect pets and merchandise and minimize loss by meeting standards and procedures, including safety, inventory control, and loss prevention. Ensure Pet Care Center opens/closes in accordance with policies and procedures, with emphasis on safety and security. Maintain the Pet Care Center’s professional image, appearance, and cleanliness. Other Essential Duties Model inspiring leadership and proactive guidance to maintain a positive business climate aligned with company goals. Promote safety by observing and implementing Petco policies and procedures; prioritize the safety of partners, guests and pets. Foster a collaborative culture that encourages ideas to increase efficiency, guest engagement, and company image. Prioritize talent development and ensure a strong talent bench through internal training and external recruitment. Engage and be present; represent Petco’s brand at a high level through strong leadership. Education And Experience High school diploma or GED; proficiency in basic business and finance acumen, analysis and problem-solving, and a focus on people development & guest service. Excellence in communication and computer skills; three or more years of management experience (retail management preferred). Working knowledge of general business practices; strong organizational skills; strong customer service orientation and interest in animals. Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle. Completion of PETCO Management Achievement Program Modules may be required for internal candidates. Supervisory Responsibility The General Manager directly supervises a team of leaders and is responsible for all Pet Care Center partners including services. Work Environment The majority of duties are indoors; occasional stocking, customer carry-outs, and bank deposits may require brief outside work. The role may involve bending, kneeling, moving merchandise (up to 50 pounds), and standing for long periods. A limited amount of travel may be required. Contacts Continuous contact with the general public at the Pet Care Center and related events; regular contact with other departments, Distribution Centers, and Support Centers. External contact may be required to coordinate merchandise, services and events. Petco is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Actual pay rates will depend on factors such as position, location, level of experience, and applicable state or local minimum wage laws. If the regulatory minimum wage exceeds the minimum indicated in the pay range below, the regulatory minimum wage will be the minimum rate applied.
