Head of R&D and External Innovation Communications (Sr. Director) Location: Cambridge, MA (Kendall Square) | Full-time | Exempt

Overview The Global R&D Communications Team advances Takeda’s scientific thought leadership by demonstrating the impact of the organization’s work, partnerships, and commitment. The Head of R&D and External Innovation Communications (Sr. Director) leads the Global R&D Communications team to generate awareness and excitement around Takeda’s R&D strategy, pipeline, and innovation agenda. The role serves as a trusted communications advisor to senior executives and collaborates with global corporate affairs, business unit communications, and other leaders to execute programming.

Responsibilities

Assume responsibility for strategic direction and day-to-day management of the Global R&D Communications team.

Provide oversight and management of the team’s professional development.

Drive the strategic development and execution of global internal and external communications to increase awareness and understanding of the pipeline, partnerships, scientific platforms, and business performance.

Shape content strategy and development related to the Global R&D story and Therapeutic Area Units (Oncology, Neuroscience, and GI & Inflammation) across digital platforms, social media, video, and print.

Serve as a trusted communications advisor to senior executives in the Global R&D organization, collaborating with global corporate affairs and other Takeda leaders to execute programming as appropriate.

Accountabilities

Develop and execute communications strategies supporting early pipeline milestones, R&D partnerships, and R&D business development transactions.

Lead and execute internal/external storytelling that supports R&D objectives, external collaborations, and priority areas of scientific innovation.

Develop messaging platforms for executives and support executive visibility initiatives, working closely with the President of R&D.

Navigate and manage issues impacting R&D, partnering with crisis leaders to ensure business continuity.

Write articles, FAQ documents, press releases, create presentations, and develop communications materials for internal and external audiences.

Oversee the creation of intranet, web, and social media content in collaboration with the team and agency partners.

Collaborate to implement measurement tools and analytics demonstrating the efficacy of communications programs.

Ensure all communications comply with Takeda operating procedures and relevant regulations.

Manage the Global R&D Communications Budget.

Education, Behavioral Competencies And Skills

Science communications experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree in communications or life sciences (minimum).

15+ years of communications experience developing external strategies for a global organization.

Minimum of 10 years of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or health care industry experience.

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; experience with C-suite and senior executives.

Strategic thinker with ability to drive effective meetings and consensus.

Scientific storyteller able to convey complex ideas in simple, concise, and creative ways across channels.

Deep understanding of the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry, media landscape, and business acumen.

Strong presentation skills and ability to persuade diverse audiences.

Strong writing and message development skills adaptable to various styles and cultures.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail and to balance short- and long-term priorities.

Strong people management experience with mentoring and coaching junior staff.

compensation and Benefits Summary U.S. Base Salary Range for location: Cambridge, MA – $208,200.00 to $327,140.00. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors including qualifications, experience, and location. Eligible for standard U.S. benefits and incentives as described by Takeda policy.
