Overview Data Scientist II role at Inside Higher Ed. The Division of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) within the Department of Health Outcomes and Biomedical Informatics (HOBI) at the University of Florida is seeking a Data Scientist II with expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced analytics. This role involves collaborating with faculty, trainees, and research staff to design and implement analytical pipelines, apply AI/ML methods, and support projects using large-scale clinical and real-world data, including electronic health records (EHRs), medical imaging, and unstructured clinical text.

Responsibilities

Develop methods and tools to effectively use electronic health record (EHR) data; apply AI/ML methods to solve clinical and biomedical problems.

Implement methods into software that meets research needs; manage and update source code; work in an interdisciplinary team during software development.

Lead and participate in design, implementation, and reporting of research and evaluation studies; contribute to manuscripts, conference papers, journal articles, and grant proposals.

Lead and participate in collaborative projects and contribute to data processing, software development, and other collaborative efforts.

Qualifications

Required:

A Bachelor’s Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field and three years of experience; Master’s Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field and one year of experience; Doctoral Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field.

A M.S. in biomedical informatics, computer science, information science, data science, (bio)-statistics, (applied) mathematics, physics, or a related STEM field.

Strong programming and data analysis skills (e.g., Python, R).

Solid understanding of machine learning, deep learning, and data modeling techniques.

Preferred:

Prior experience with EHR data, machine learning, deep learning, imaging informatics, and large language models (LLM); experience with ML packages (PyTorch, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Pandas, Keras, NumPy, SciPy), SVM,GBM, and deep learning models (GNN, CNN, GCN) including LLMs; ability to develop informatics tools and software packages; excellent communication skills for diverse audiences.

Applying advanced statistical, AI/ML, and informatics methods to analyze real-world data (EHRs, images, clinical notes) for biomedical and health outcomes research; supporting development and implementation of novel informatics approaches, including vision-language models and foundation models.

Assisting with causal inference and discovery methods, including causal AI approaches for clinical trial emulation; contributing to manuscript preparation, grant proposal development, and dissemination of results; providing technical guidance and near-peer mentorship.

Salary Expected Salary:

$73,000
