Overview
Director of SCADA Engineering at Qcells EPC. Location: Irvine, CA. Department: Technology Center. Supervisor: Head of Systems Integration. Work Status: Hybrid. FLSA Status: Exempt. Position Status: Permanent, Full-time. The Director of SCADA Engineering will serve as the technical subject matter expert during all project lifecycle phases for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) new projects across the United States. Hanwha Qcells USA Corp (Qcells USA) specializes in providing utility-scale modules, solar photovoltaic (PV), and battery energy storage systems (BESS) project development, along with Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services for solar and BESS projects nationwide. Qcells USA delivers turnkey solutions spanning the entire project lifecycle and collaborates with internal groups such as Project Finance, Systems Integration, and Legal. Qcells USA is part of Hanwha Group, with global operations and a history of PV manufacturing excellence. This role is hybrid located in Irvine, CA, with travel up to 30% and standard business hours as described in the job posting. Responsibilities
Manage technical team to deliver technical due diligence supporting the initial project phase. Analyze customer requirements related to BESS system and each component in terms of functionality and performance. Manage a team of Field Engineers to support Commissioning of EPC projects. Define the specification (H/W, S/W, Communication I/F, etc.) of power block level controller functionality and performance, and lead software development. Review and approve development results at each stage of software design, test report, and hardware specification. Provide guidance to software development plans and product roadmap. Act as the subject matter expert for industry best practices, regulations, compliance, and standards around PPC/SCADA, NERC CIP, NIST, NERC Mod, applicable IEC and IEEE standards. Manage conceptual BESS (or PV+BESS) system architecture layouts, network diagrams, and wiring diagrams; select components during planning based on site specifics, performance, and financial objectives. Visit project sites, supplier sites, or third-party sites to assess and collect critical technical information, participate in equipment inspections/tests, and system commissioning. Oversee PPC, SCADA, Network and BOS equipment manufacturers for alignment with customer needs and standards. Oversee collaboration with Engineering teams to define and integrate components and check functionality of the renewable energy system (PCS, Battery, Inverter, BOP, etc.). Oversee the development of controls and algorithms for energy systems applications. Coordinate with Developer, EPC, and other involved parties during planning, installation, and commissioning to provide engineering deliverables for project success. Primary focus on ERCOT, CAISO, and ISO NE markets; will understand additional US ISOs / RTOs over time. Attend work as required by the company’s attendance policy and supervisory assignments. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by Management. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Automation/Computer Science or Software Development with a minimum of 10+ years of experience in EMS applications in the renewable energy field. 10+ years of experience interacting with system integration engineers, Utilities, ISOs, IPPs in the US market. 5+ years of Energy application software development management with deployment experience. Field experience deploying Solar/storage/wind control systems in the US market. Advanced proficiency in software design and energy modeling applications, such as UML and Agile tools. Proficiency in programming languages like C, C++, Java, Python, etc. Advanced proficiency in communication interfaces like Modbus, DNP3.0, OPC, CAN, Restful API, https, etc. Strong understanding of network communication architectures, protocols, and NERC standards. Understanding of power plant modeling tools and model creation in PSSE, PSCAD, or similar tools. Familiarity with project lifecycle and contract structures for solar, storage, or renewable projects. Ability to work with stakeholders including investors, EPC partners, developers, consultants, O&M contractors, and suppliers. Knowledge to apply NEC, ISO, building and AHJ codes and rules on system designs. Ability to develop written/verbal work deliverables appropriate to audiences. Strong ownership, can-do attitude, and hands-on approach; team player with attention to detail. Ability to communicate with diverse audiences including product engineering and sales teams. The anticipated starting pay range for Irvine, CA is $185,000 - $250,000 base salary per year. This range is required by the California Pay Transparency Act and may differ based on location, experience, and other factors. An additional discretionary bonus or incentives may be offered, along with medical, dental, and other benefits, depending on the level and position offered.
