CITY OF FAIRFIELD - MECHANIC

A written exam for the position of Mechanic for the City of Fairfield will be conducted on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at 6:00 pm, at the Fairfield Community Arts Center, located at 411 Wessel Drive, Fairfield, OH 45014.

Typical duties for this position include repairing and maintaining a variety of City-owned motor vehicles and equipment.

Applicants must have knowledge of and substantial experience with standard practices, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles; experience with electronic diagnostic equipment.

The scope of the written exam will be 100 multiple-choice questions.

Probationary Period: Six (6) months

Beginning Salary Range: Mechanic $29.96 - 34.98

Examples of Duties

  • Performs maintenance, diagnoses and repairs a large and complex variety of automotive and heavy-duty equipment associated with a municipal government. This equipment includes, but is not limited to automobiles, heavy duty trucks, snow equipment, backhoes, loaders, mowers, tractors, fire engines, pumps, ambulances, sewer vacuum trucks, and all associated emergency equipment and lighting.
  • Performs welding and metal fabrication.
  • Analyzes and repairs mechanical malfunctions on computer-controlled equipment utilizing electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Overhauls and repairs gasoline, diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, differentials, suspensions, brakes, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems, etc.
  • Operates snow and ice removal equipment including after-hours operations.
  • Follows a program of preventive maintenance to assure vehicles and equipment remain in effective working order.
  • Documents repair and maintenance records as required.
  • Performs all duties in a safe manner and per applicable Federal, State and local rules and regulations.

Typical Qualifications

Requires a minimum of three years' experience working in an automotive garage as a Mechanic. Knowledge of and substantial experience with standard practices, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and trucks; experience with electronic diagnostic equipment; substantial experience doing vehicle modifications and repairs. Proficient in MIG and Arc Welding. ASE certifications preferred. Must be able to prepare and maintain accurate repair records. Oral and Written communications and interpersonal skills; successful completion of Civil Service Examination and high school diploma or G.E.D. Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with type "N" (Tank) endorsement during probationary period.
