Position Summary

The Retail Store Manager oversees all day-to-day operations of the garden center retail store specific to plant material. This role ensures exceptional customer service, efficient operations, and a thriving sales environment while maintaining the center’s reputation for high-quality plants, products, and expert advice. This position also coordinates between our plant production facility and the needs of the retail facility.

Reports To: Owner & Operations Manager

Location: Newport News, VA

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the garden center retail store, ensuring a welcoming and well-maintained environment.
  • Lead, coach, and schedule retail staff to provide outstanding customer service and meet sales goals.
  • Develop and implement merchandising plans and seasonal displays to drive sales and showcase products.
  • Manage inventory, including ordering, receiving, pricing, and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
  • Track sales, budgets, and performance metrics; prepare and present regular reports to leadership.
  • Handle customer concerns and ensure a positive shopping experience.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and labor regulations.
  • Collaborate with growers/production staff to align plant availability and promotions.
  • Train staff on product knowledge, upselling techniques, and customer service standards.
  • Oversee opening/closing procedures, cash management, and reconciliation.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s or Associate's degree in horticulture, agriculture, business administration, retail, or a related field. Or equivalent years of experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years retail management experience (preferably in a garden center, nursery, or related environment).
  • At least 2 years of garden center or horticulture experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team.
  • Strong knowledge of plants, gardening products, and seasonal trends.
  • Excellent organizational, merchandising, and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in POS systems and inventory management software.
  • Ability to work weekends and extended hours during peak seasons.

Skills

  • Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and develop teams.
  • Excellent business acumen with proven ability to meet sales and profitability goals.
  • Solid knowledge of plant care, horticulture, and garden retail operations.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work weekends and extended retail hours as required.
