Chicago, IL Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Underwriter to support the underwriting and portfolio management of renewable energy risks within the Property & Casualty (P&C) sector. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex, evolving risks in solar, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and other renewable technologies. The ideal candidate will combine strong analytical ability with an interest in sustainable energy and commercial insurance. Key Responsibilities
Underwrite new and renewal business for renewable energy clients across key P&C lines, including Property, General Liability, and Excess/Umbrella. Evaluate risks during both construction and operational phases using engineering reports, broker submissions, and internal tools. Work within established underwriting authority to assess exposures, set pricing, determine coverage terms, and ensure policy compliance. Support senior underwriters and leadership in developing and maintaining a profitable renewable energy portfolio. Build and maintain relationships with brokers, clients, and internal teams including risk engineering, claims, and actuarial. Assist in data analysis, account file documentation, and coordination of multinational insurance programs where applicable. Stay informed on industry developments, regulatory changes, and emerging risks relevant to renewable energy and industrial insurance. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Environmental Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field. 3+ years of commercial underwriting experience; exposure to renewable energy or energy/power risks is preferred. Familiarity with P&C lines such as Property and General Liability; experience with renewable energy technologies is a strong advantage. Strong analytical and organizational skills, with attention to detail in evaluating complex risks. Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with underwriting systems, rating tools, and CAT modeling platforms is a plus. Willingness to travel as needed for client and broker meetings. Experience working within a global insurance framework is a plus. Compensation
The base salary range for this position is $125,000-$145,000 plus eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus. Actual compensation will be based on a variety of factors including experience, education, and location. Benefits
