LHH is partnering with a large construction company with significant East Coast operations that is looking to add a Senior Project Accountant to their team. Reporting to a Controller, this position is best suited for candidates with a couple years of project accounting experience, ideally within the construction industry.
Responsibilities
Oversee all project accounting activities, including setup, cost tracking, billing, and closeout for multiple and/or complex projects.
Prepare, review, and analyze monthly project billings and owner requisitions in accordance with contract requirements.
Monitor project budgets, track actual costs versus estimates, and provide variance analysis and financial insights to project managers and leadership.
Process and review vendor and subcontractor invoices, ensuring compliance with contract terms, insurance, and lien waiver requirements.
Coordinate with project teams on change orders, budget revisions, and project status updates.
Prepare and distribute job cost reports, financial statements, and project-specific reports for management and stakeholders.
Support month-end and year-end financial closings, including preparation of project-specific schedules and reports.
Assist with project audits, compliance reviews, and the collection of required documentation from vendors and subcontractors.
Mentor and provide training to junior project accountants, sharing best practices and ensuring high standards of accuracy and compliance.
Identify and implement process improvements and technology enhancements within the project accounting function.
Participate in project meetings, providing financial expertise and supporting project decision-making.
Contribute to special analyses and ad hoc reporting as required.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
5+ years of progressive project accounting experience, ideally within the construction, engineering, or related project-based industries.
Strong understanding of project accounting principles, job costing, WIP, AIA billings, percentage of completion, and financial reporting.
Experience working with larger projects ($30m+) required.
Experience with Cost-Plus required
Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel; experience with industry-specific platforms (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, Timberline) is a plus.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working with project teams and mentoring junior staff.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and exercising discretion with sensitive information.
