Job Summary
Core Tax Services (CTS) Manager - ASC740
is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying methods of complying with tax regulations, and acting as the primary client contact for complex corporate tax and ASC 740 issues. The manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues and communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy.
Job Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensures clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and that self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
Conducts top level review of T/R and resolves tax issues with the client; involves specialists where appropriate.
Communicates issues identified in tax accrual review with Assurance clients.
Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures, including:
Budgeting and staffing
Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior
Timely billing including management of out-of-scope activity and communication to client
Timely collection of A/R
Manages client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project.
Provides advice to clients in a timely manner.
Research
Identifies when research is needed; frames issues to be researched and reports the analysis.
Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provides research methodology for efficient research processes.
Trains managers/staff on research skills and frames ASC 740 tax issues for analysis; involves firm specialists as appropriate.
ASC 740 (fka FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO TQM regarding ASC 740.
Explains and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to the client, including ASC 740 complexities.
Communicates with Assurance team to plan tax accrual reviews (budget, scope, and delivery dates).
Reviews tax provisions with in-depth knowledge of ASC 740; reviews prepared workpapers.
Utilizes and manages Specialized Tax Services (STS) as needed.
Tax Consulting
Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes.
Considers CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client.
Develops and implements a work plan including STS assistance on ongoing projects from the client.
Serves as a technical resource and ensures client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA).
Provides effective assistance with exam support and frames projects/issues for delegation to seniors and associates.
Tax Specialization
Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in areas such as individual, corporate, property, sales, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, and R&D tax benefits.
May organize internal CPE training and mentor managers/seniors/associates on ASC 740.
Strategy Development
Introduces and develops ideas to improve client or Firm position (e.g., reducing taxes or expenses, or providing non-tax benefits).
Suggests improvements to previous work products or approaches; may lead marketing campaigns; presents complex strategies to clients.
Collaborates with National Tax and STS to deliver high-quality deliverables and analyses on ASC 740.
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises Associates and Senior Associates on all projects.
Reviews work and provides review comments.
Trains Associates and Seniors on current software tools.
Acts as a Career Advisor to Associates and Senior Associates.
Schedules and manages workload of Associates and Senior Associates.
Provides verbal and written performance feedback to Associates and Senior Associates.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Education
Bachelors degree in Accounting or Taxation, required
Masters degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred
Experience
Five (5) or more years of prior experience, required
Experience in managing the process of preparing and auditing ASC 740 computations for both privately held and publicly traded clients, required
Supervisory experience, required
Multinational client experience, preferred
License/Certifications
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or the equivalent), required
Software
Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook), and Adobe Acrobat, required
Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA; Proficient in tax compliance process software including GoFileRoom, GoSystem RS, Caseware, BNA Depreciation Software, or comparable programs and standard tax workpapers, preferred

Individual salaries offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of factors including qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
California Range: $102,300 - $150,000
Colorado Range: $115,000 - $135,000
Illinois Range: $105,000 - $130,000
Maryland Range: $113,000 - $120,000
Massachusetts Range: $120,000 - $127,000
Minnesota Range: $90,000 - $120,000
New Jersey Range: $115,000 - $140,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $125,000 - $160,000
