Overview
Our client, a mission-driven and rapidly growing nonprofit organization in New Jersey, is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to lead core accounting functions and support the organization’s vital community-focused work. This is a leadership role where you’ll oversee expense and cash accounting, accounts payable, financial reporting, and audits while coaching a team and driving continuous improvement across accounting operations. What You’ll Do:
Manage daily accounting operations, including expenses, AP, fixed assets, cash management, and debt reporting Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and performance management Review, monitor, and analyze monthly expenses to ensure accuracy in the general ledger Lead the month-end and year-end close process, preparing financial statements and supporting schedules in compliance with GAAP Oversee reconciliations for balance sheet accounts, ensuring audit-ready accuracy Partner with internal teams to review budgets, forecasts, and variances; explain results and provide recommendations Support treasury activities including wire transfers and cash flow forecasting Maintain and enhance accounting systems, including chart of accounts, reporting structures, and staff training Collaborate with program leaders to provide financial insights that support decision-making Assist with annual audit preparation and coordinate external auditor requests Drive process improvements and strengthen internal controls to increase efficiency and accuracy What You Bring:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required 10+ years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or management capacity Experience in nonprofit strongly preferred Strong knowledge of GAAP, audit procedures, and internal controls Proficiency in Workday and Excel; ability to identify system/process improvements Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial data into clear insights Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and develop a high-performing team Analytical mindset with a proven track record of solving problems and improving processes Seniority level
