Overview
The YMCA of Montclair seeks a Controller to lead day-to-day financial operations under the general direction of the Chief Financial Officer. The Controller supports the CFO in improving overall financial health and maintaining full compliance with applicable regulations. The role requires expertise in accounting functions, policies and procedures, and ensuring preparation of complete and accurate financial statements, as well as oversight of the annual audit. Responsibilities
Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes and reporting. Prepare and analyze financial statements, management reports, and variance analyses. Perform month-end and year-end closings, including bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, closing journal entries, and posting monthly accruals. Coordinate bank deposits and report financial results regularly to the CFO. Support the CFO in preparing Board and Finance Committee meetings, including monthly reports, forecasting, and financial presentations. Support the CFO in managing the annual budgeting process. Oversee the accounting system (SGA) configuration, administration, user access, and creation of general ledger accounts. Provide guidance and recommendations to the CFO on issues affecting the organization\'s financial outcomes. Ensure financial management of grants and timely submission of reports. Assist the CFO with external audit processes and manage relationships with external auditors. Develop, implement, and continuously improve accounting processes, procedures, and controls. Ensure current accounting standards and legal requirements are met. Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Support the CFO with ad hoc reporting and, during the CFO\'s absence, serve as acting CFO and support the Finance team and EMT. Assist with the preparation of reports for required governmental agencies and Y-USA; manage transactions, files, and reports to ensure timely preparation of account reports. Manage and develop accounting staff and foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment. Complete special projects as assigned to support financial objectives. Participate in abuse risk management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants; ensure compliance with screening requirements and provide ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk. Respond promptly to policy and procedure violations and follow mandated reporting requirements; communicate the YMCA\'s commitment to protecting members from abuse. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or related field. 8+ years of progressive accounting experience. 6+ years of experience managing a team. Approachable, collaborative, and influential partner to business leaders. Ability to be autonomous, multi-task, set priorities and execute in a fast-paced environment. Ability to remain focused under pressure, ambiguity, frequent change, or unpredictability to adapt with a scaling business. Strong presentation skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational, attention to detail, time-management, and problem-solving and analytical skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion. An exemplary model of professionalism, integrity, dependability, and trustworthiness. Strong proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint; advanced use of Excel including formulas, filtering, pivot tables, sorting and formatting. Onsite 4 days/week, 1 day remote from home (non-negotiable). Preferred
