The Small Farms Resource and Innovation Center (SFRIC) Director leads the center to address pressing issues and trends affecting small farmers within the broader food, agricultural, and environmental systems. The position supports CAES in integrating its research, extension, and teaching innovations to strengthen outreach to socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers (SDFRs) and to expand CAES outreach that enhances the economy, environment, and well-being of people in North Carolina and beyond through research-based information and education. The Director works to reduce threats to small farmers’ economic viability and operates across the college’s tripartite mission of teaching, research, and extension while applying an understanding of the ecology of farming and integration across production-marketing-consumption.

The role emphasizes collaboration across CAES and its disciplines to address challenges facing small-scale agriculture, including competition from big-box e-commerce distributors and shifting market dynamics.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country. It enrolls thousands of students and offers a wide range of programs. It is nationally recognized for leadership in STEM education and research, with various Carnegie classifications and economic impact. The CAES is a leading college within the 1890 Land-grant framework, producing graduates across multiple disciplines and conducting research and extension to serve citizens, communities, and industry partners.

Minimum Requirements A Master’s degree in Agriculture or related discipline and at least 10 years of experience in outreach, teaching, or a role involving agriculture, agribusiness, or agricultural marketing

Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work with teams and build partnerships

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, document and market program impacts, and demonstrate leadership and self-reliance in a collaborative environment

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education Ph.D. in Agriculture or closely related field and at least 5 years of experience in related areas

Knowledge of NC agriculture and the needs of limited-resource farmers and ranchers

Ability to build and maintain partnerships with organizations in public, industry, and community sectors

Understanding of issues affecting small farmers and opportunities for sustainability of small farming communities

Experience developing and delivering professional materials on program development and policy for small farmers

Ability to analyze complex topics and data related to program impacts, budgets, and policies affecting small farmers and limited-resource communities

Experience aiding policy or program development in collaboration with public and private agencies

Track record of securing competitive grants and contracts

Required License or Certification Remote or Hybrid Work Arrangement

This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. North Carolina A&T State University employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
