Overview

Director of Construction Operations at Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity (GDMHFH). This role is a strategic leader responsible for guiding the construction operations team to deliver quality products that advance the organization’s mission of affordable homeownership. It includes shaping the long-term vision for construction operations and aligning with organizational goals to build systems for sustainable growth. Core Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Planning: Develop and execute a long-term construction strategy for self-performed work aligned with GDMHFH’s priorities and mission of building quality, affordable housing. Create and monitor measures for safety, quality, cost, volunteer engagement, and project delivery. Lead capacity planning and resource allocation to support growth. Recommend strategies to improve efficiency, sustainability, volunteer engagement, and impact. Lead, Manage and Hold Accountable: Provide vision and leadership to site leaders and staff supporting construction operations. Create an environment of accountability, teamwork and professional growth. Foster a welcoming, safe and rewarding environment for volunteers, ensuring effective engagement. Safety Leadership: Serve as construction safety lead and active member of the safety council. Define the construction operations safety strategy, analyze trends and track metrics to improve safety. Oversee reporting, job hazard assessments, incident investigations and corrective actions to ensure compliance and continuous learning. Construction Methods and Quality: Define, refine and implement construction standards and methods. Develop systems to measure and report on quality outcomes, including error reduction and adherence to timelines and budgets. Ensure staff use established systems to record information timely. Conduct regular inspections, quality reviews and audits; create action plans to mitigate shortfalls. Construction Work Projects and Volunteer Integration: Review project mix and volunteer availability to maximize cost efficiency, quality and impact. Oversee scheduling and execution of volunteer work with site managers and the Volunteer Engagement team. Collaborate with the Director of Construction Planning and Procurement, superintendents and others to ensure timely, high-quality project completion. Assess and define team competencies to increase capacity and cost effectiveness over time. Asset and Resource Management: Lead strategic planning, budgeting, acquisition and management of equipment, tools and facilities. Track asset utilization and coordinate with Site Supervisors to ensure tools are available and in good condition. Ensure maintenance and sustainability of equipment, tools, vehicles and facilities. Requirements

Strong desire to support GDMHFH’s mission of creating and maintaining quality, affordable low-income housing. Proven track record in strategic construction leadership, including the ability to align operations with organizational goals. Strong background in construction processes including ability to read blueprints, interpret documents, and ensure safety practices. Skilled in leveraging technology for effectiveness and reporting; proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams); experience with construction software a plus; willing to learn required systems. Proven ability to collaborate with all levels of staff and external partners, prospective homeowners, subcontractors and others across diverse backgrounds. Excellent time management skills with ability to meet deadlines; adaptable to shifting priorities and business needs. Experience developing and using metrics to evaluate performance, safety and efficiency; strong problem solving and decision-making capabilities.
