The Anatomical Education Program was founded in 1903 and supports the mission of Indiana University School of Medicine by providing whole body donors to medical and allied health students at all 9 campuses of Indiana University, as well as partner schools and institutions across the Hoosier state.
Job Summary
Department Specific Responsibilities Oversees the necessary preservation of donors for class while also completing the necessary paperwork and communicating with the donor families. Works in conjunction with the contract embalmer and will have daily supervision responsibilities for the disposition specialist. General Responsibilities
Serves as licensed funeral director for anatomy education program(s); serves as liaison with external funeral directors and general public concerning body donation program; works closely with faculty to meet teaching and research needs. Receives and examines cadavers, checks for proper paperwork/records, prepares/embalms bodies for storage and oversees embalming and preparation by contractor; prepares bodies for transportation to gross lab, centers or other requests; assures accurate record keeping, serological testing, and documentation of acceptance of body donations, usage, cremation, and return of remains. Maintains embalming lab, storage racks, crematory and gross anatomy laboratory; ensures a clean, safe, and organized donor preparation area; maintains inventory and orders supplies, repairs equipment used in the embalming area as needed. Consults with faculty to ensure proper setup and organization of laboratory for medical, dental, paramedical and special medical classes. Serves as a resource to answer anatomical questions and questions about policies and procedures relating to procurement and dispensation of cadaver material both within the state of Indiana. Provides information about body donations; makes arrangements for dispensation of donated cadavers outside of normal working hours (evenings, weekends and holidays). Counsels funeral directors, family, hospitals and nursing care personnel regarding conditions for approval and/or rejection of bodies. Prepares remains for distribution to funeral homes, families, or burial; coordinates interment of all remains not returned to families; Supervises burial of remains. Qualifications
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) Associates of Applied Mortuary Science
OR Completed a similar program at an accredited mortuary science school WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
2 years related experience in funeral service and embalming LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Active Indiana Funeral Director's License SKILLS

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
