Overview
Data Scientist 1 role at State of Iowa - Executive Branch. The Iowa Department of Revenue’s Internal Services Division is seeking a Data Scientist 1 to join the Data Analytics Bureau. The Internal Services Division supports the Department’s day-to-day operations, including safeguarding confidential taxpayer data, GovConnectIowa Program management, technology integration with business objectives, human resources, data analytics, and business continuity. The division focuses on elevating internal and external customer experiences and coordinates education and outreach initiatives throughout the year. The Data Scientist will use the Department’s data to develop analytical insights and drive data‑driven decisions that improve operations and public outcomes.
In This Position You Will Be Responsible For
Working with stakeholders to identify opportunities to enhance the Department’s performance by using data‑driven tools to obtain, measure, and analyze results.
Conducting data analysis to uncover patterns, trends, and anomalies using statistical techniques (e.g., heat maps, regression models, time series models, decision trees, and survey/text analysis).
Researching and implementing techniques and tools in machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve data analysis efficiency and drive business growth, efficiency, and innovation.
Managing, implementing, and maintaining the analytical and AI platforms used by the Department.
Leading the Department’s use of AI platforms through dashboard development and ongoing platform support to improve model design and performance.
Developing and refining AI-generated prompts to ensure accuracy, engagement, and relevance for various applications, and collaborating with teams to improve prompt generation and AI system performance.
Defining data needs for KPIs, metrics, and dashboards, gathering data from multiple sources, preparing data for analysis, and presenting findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
Assisting in building and designing statistical models (e.g., what‑if, diagnostic, financial) to answer business questions.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge and experience using SAS Viya, Excel, SQL, and other analytical tools to respond to data requests and solve problems, including writing or reviewing code to resolve issues and summarizing data for analysis.
Experience creating advanced visualizations and dashboards that clearly communicate complex findings using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, SAS Visual Analytics, JMP, etc.
Experience in the management and administration of Analytical and AI platforms.

Minimum Qualification Requirements Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree in business analytics, economics, data science, statistics, mathematics, management information systems, or industrial management, and experience equal to three years of full‑time work in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science.
All of the following (a, b, and c):
Three years of full‑time work experience in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science; and
A total of four years of education and/or full‑time experience in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science, where 30 semester hours of coursework equals one year of experience; and
Possession of a professional certificate in data science, business analytics, or data analytics.
All of the following (a, b, and c):
One year of full‑time work experience in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science; and
A total of four years of education and/or full‑time experience as described above; and
A total of two years of graduate‑level education and/or full‑time experience (as described above), where twenty‑four semester hours of graduate coursework in relevant fields equals one year of experience. Note: Computer Science courses may not qualify
Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full‑time work as a Data Analyst 2.

This position may require coming into the Hoover Building in Des Moines for meetings as needed.
