Overview
Senior Scene Technician – Cal Performances at UC Berkeley. This role involves implementing technical elements of events in Cal Performances’ venues under supervision, with responsibilities across stage operations and collaboration with production staff. Responsibilities
Production Implementation Assists with the implementation of all technical-related elements required by events during pre-hangs, load-ins, rehearsals, shows, load-outs, and changeovers. Performs general stage duties as needed. Assists full crew with off-stage tasks including loading/unloading trucks, setup/strike of staging, audio, video, lighting, and/or scenic elements in non-performance spaces. Gathers equipment and safely transports it from storage to the stage; returns gear to storage. Maintains storage areas in a clean and organized manner. Practices and enforces safe working habits; reports unsafe conditions and proactively manages risk on stage and in work areas. Executes cues correctly per production or in-house instructions. Other duties as assigned. Specialization Senior Scene Technicians have demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of stage specialization and can work independently in that area with general supervision. They should have familiarity with other technical areas and can perform general duties in those areas. Under supervision of Stage Supervisors, Event Managers, or designated touring personnel, they implement the technical elements of events and function effectively under performance conditions. Areas of Specialization Stage Carpentry, Properties, And Rigging:
Safely implement production carpentry and properties; operate and maintain rigging systems; lead other Scene Technicians in activities such as constructing/scenery, hanging soft goods, assembling props, stage setup, and maintenance. Lighting:
Hang, circuit, focus, and color lighting plots; operate and maintain lighting systems; troubleshoot; work safely at heights; program and operate cues on lighting consoles; lead electrics-related activities and show running. Sound:
Install, operate, and maintain sound systems; utilize software for multi-channel playback, DSP, and networking; coordinate RF in wireless environments; mic and wire stages; troubleshoot sound systems and mix live performances to specification. Audiovisual:
Install and operate multimedia systems; troubleshoot components; manage video and livestreaming workflows; operate AV equipment to Stage Supervisors/Managers’ satisfaction. Crew Lead:
Lead crews, participate in technical rehearsals, problem-solve, and promote professional working environment; coordinate with Event Managers, Stage Supervisors, touring staff, artists, and vendors; call cues and ensure smooth event running; promote safety practices and professional development. Required Qualifications Minimum 3 years of experience in technical theater production in a professional live performance setting (theater, dance, music), including concerts, recitals, conferences, broadcasts, and live streaming events. Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills; ability to work with diverse teams and independently follow through on projects. Ability to interpret and explain graphical plots, diagrams, and paperwork; recognize unsafe practices and address them. Experience with safe operation of personnel lifts, power tools, hand tools, pneumatic equipment, and material handling equipment. Knowledge of PPE usage to protect self and others; willingness to learn venue-specific systems and procedures; positive and collaborative attitude; ability to work calmly under pressure and adapt to changing priorities. Ability to work long hours, overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays; ability to move items up to 50 lbs; ability to work at heights and around moving machinery; exposure to noise, dust, and drafts. Appreciation for a wide variety of performing arts; knowledge of IP networking and computer components; high comfort with technology; willingness to continually learn. Industry-recognized certifications are welcome (ETCP, CTS, OSHA-10, OSHA-30, etc). Salary & Benefits
