Position Summary

Director, Center for Cancer Imaging Research Department of Radiology & Imaging Sciences Indiana University School of Medicine Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences has launched a national search for a director for the newly commissioned Center for Cancer Imaging Research. The mission of the IUSM Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences is to provide impactful clinical care to patients and to advance clinical care regionally, nationally, and internationally through translational research and training the next generation of clinicians, researchers, and technologists. The department has a strong research program with over 35 research faculty organized within the Imaging Research Institute. In 2023, the Blue Ridge Institute rankings listed the department 15th in NIH funding. The Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research ranked the department 13th nationally in NIH funding in 2023, placing the department 6th among all public institutions and 1st among Big 10 institutions. There are ongoing collaborations across IUSM clinical and basic science departments, with neighboring institutions such as Purdue University and industry partners. The department supports other investigators through the Developing Radiologic Imaging Value & Effectiveness in Research ( DRIVER ) program and houses the Imaging Research Institute, which comprises the Center for Neuroimaging, Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center, Center for Cancer Imaging, and a state-of-the-art Research Imaging Core with a radiochemistry program including cyclotron and a whole-body PET/MR system. IUSM also hosts medical physics programs that provide internal and external services. IUSM is home to the Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in Indiana and one of 51 in the nation. The ideal candidate for the Director of the Center for Cancer Imaging Research will be a dynamic, highly collaborative cancer imaging investigator with a strong, extramurally funded research program. The Director will be expected to develop and build a vision for cancer imaging research in the Department and across IUSM. The Director is expected to build diverse but interrelated programs with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative imaging technologies and apply existing imaging tools to enable cancer biology studies that address transformative questions and unmet patient needs in cancer diagnostics and targeted therapeutics. Responsibilities include the following: Build robust interdisciplinary Cancer Imaging Research programs spanning basic and translational research, comprising scientists, clinicians, and biomedical engineers, with a goal of establishing IU Radiology and Imaging Sciences at IUSM as a global leader in translational imaging for cancer research. Lead the organization of research by faculty within and outside the department related to cancer imaging research. Expand inter-departmental collaborations for novel image-guided diagnostics and interventions in cancer research using model systems. Increase the department\'s visibility and impact in cancer imaging research through expanding extramural funding from sources including NIH, DoD, ARPA, and others, and promote publications in high-impact journals. Collaborate closely with the Simon Cancer Center to investigate new imaging technologies and to expand the infrastructure for biomedical imaging research to advance cancer imaging research in the Department. Expand the portfolio of intellectual property in cancer imaging. Initiate, support and expand investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials centered on imaging-guided cancer research. Partner with commercial entities to jointly develop materials, methods, and tools targeting cancer; foster incubators that may spin off new startups to enable commercialization of disruptive technologies. Demonstrate experience in leading research teams and possess excellent communication skills (preferred). Substantial resources are available commensurate with the vision for the Center for Cancer Imaging Research.
