Staff Research Associate

— Filing Deadline: Tue 10/14/2025 Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UC San Diego supports and participates in the academic, clinical, and research mission. The department includes 48 full-time faculty, 50 voluntary faculty, 4 physicians on MSP contracts, 32 trainees, and 34 staff. It generates over $12M in clinical revenue and $5M in research grants and contracts, with total annual expenditures exceeding $30M. The department provides a full spectrum of musculoskeletal clinical care and has research expertise in muscle metabolism and physiology, neuromuscular bioengineering, intervertebral disc, and musculoskeletal physiology and epidemiology. Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will: Handle and care for animals, perform applicable surgical techniques, and execute humane euthanasia according to established protocols. Prepare specimens for histology and cell biology experiments, including biochemical and molecular biology techniques and cell culture experiments; assist in studies using animal tissues. Document, organize, and store samples; evaluate sample quality according to standards. Assess experimental results under supervision and troubleshoot to improve outcomes. Record, analyze, and present data using appropriate software; maintain detailed records, reference materials, and central files. Keep the lab clean and safe; order and maintain lab supplies; participate in training of lab members in protocols and safety. Supervise undergraduate volunteers and research interns in the lab; perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

Theoretical knowledge of biology, microbiology, or a related field typically acquired through formal education or comparable experience. Demonstrated skill working with animals (particularly mice) and handling animal and human tissues; tissue trimming and histology analysis; familiarity with necropsy; ability to care for and handle small lab animals and administer medications and anesthesia for procedures; familiarity with writing Animal Subjects protocols and with surgical microscopes. Strong communication skills to liaison between PI, laboratory personnel, and ACP veterinary staff. Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact professionally and effectively with collaborators and staff. Demonstrated skill in accurate record-keeping and ability to organize, analyze, and calculate data; basic math for ledgers and expenditures. Good organizational skills to order laboratory equipment and supplies. Multitasking ability to manage assigned work and oversee lab volunteers. Knowledge of general laboratory safety procedures. Preferred Qualifications

Experience with assisting in grant writing, manuscript preparation, and familiarity with basic statistics. Knowledge of EH&S policies and hazardous waste handling procedures. Special Conditions

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,301 - $97,008 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $46.46 Factors in determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business needs. The Hiring Pay Scale is the budgeted range UC San Diego reasonably expects to pay. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader due to internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (where applicable). Additional Details
