Residence Director
Position Description: The Residence Director is responsible for providing leadership, management, and direction for a comprehensive residential education program for one residence hall and/or apartment community housing between 400-900 students. The Residence Director implements the department's residential curriculum on belonging for residents, a learning-outcome driven curriculum focusing on Community, Identity, and Empowerment & Support. The role develops and maintains an inclusive residential learning environment that supports the academic mission of the University and oversees a variety of educational, administrative, and operational functions within the residential community. The position collaborates with a building management team and reports directly to a Coordinator of Residential Life.
Responsibilities Responsibilities for this position include the following:
40% Residential Education/Residential Programs
Develop and implement a comprehensive student development program reflecting the departmental residential curriculum.
Develop and execute lesson plans to facilitate student learning.
Plan and coordinate academic and identity-related services and programs in collaboration with Living Learning Community partners (where applicable).
Oversee and administer the student conduct system for residents and serve as a residential hearing officer with authority up to contract termination.
Coordinate on-site and frontline response to incidents, including highly complex situations (e.g., sexual misconduct, alcohol and drug-related behavior, mental health concerns, bias incidents, and community conflict).
Provide direction and leadership for student engagement and student leadership initiatives within the residential community.
Assist in providing leadership to residential life committees focused on educational initiatives.
Assist with development of the residential life strategic plan, annual work plan, and input for the 10-Year Capital Plan.
Review student satisfaction survey results and address hall/apartment-related concerns.
Center the needs and experiences of those facing identity-based barriers and respond with support, space, and advocacy.
35% Supervision
Supervise, train, and evaluate staff (e.g., an Assistant Residence Director or Community & Engagement Intern).
Participate in the selection, supervision, training, and evaluation of Community Advisors.
Lead weekly staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with staff.
Assist with training of student staff in housing operations, facilities, and/or conferences and event services.
Develop and implement strategies to recruit, retain, and support a diverse staff.
Serve as a resource on University and departmental policies and procedures.
20% Residential Life Operations
Oversee safety initiatives for the residential community and promote a safe environment.
Manage budgets of approximately $175,000-$235,000 for student and staff engagement.
Collaborate with building management team to address building needs; monitor custodial/maintenance and dining operations; report concerns to supervisors.
Oversee building communication strategies across platforms including social media.
Serve as 24/7 on-call professional staff for crisis response on a rotating basis.
Support oversight of the Business Office, 24/7 Information Desk, security monitor program, occupancy, summer conferences, and student conduct processes.
Lead special projects and maintain inviting office spaces with updated community displays.
5% Outreach
Collaborate with other University departments to provide learning, services, and programs for residents.
Collaborate with University Dining Services to support a high-quality residential dining program.
Participate in recruitment and marketing activities and represent Housing & Residential Life at recruiting events.
Work Environment: Work is performed mainly in an office setting.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in college student personnel, education, psychology, leadership, or closely related field; or BA/BS with at least five years of relevant experience.
Knowledge of housing operations on a college campus.
Two years of housing or student affairs leadership experience in a college or university setting.
Significant knowledge, background, and experience working with people of all backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrate commitment to the educational potential of residence life.
Skills in communication/public speaking, organization/planning, and administration.
Previous experience supervising residential life student staff.
Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $48,713.60 + 2 bedroom apartment and a meal plan
