Overview
The Associate Director for Training, Outreach, and Psychological Assessment (Associate Director) provides oversight to a multidisciplinary clinical team tasked with training, outreach, and psychological assessments. The team oversees clinical training programs for graduate student trainees (practicum students), doctoral interns, and postdoctoral fellows, including data collection and evaluation of training services and training program development in accordance with guidelines and accreditation requirements of the American Psychological Association (APA). The team also oversees the outreach and programmatic efforts of the University Counseling Center (UCC) to support campus and individual mental health, wellness, and skill development, as well as UCC psychological assessments in collaboration with and on behalf of the medication management team, Student Health Center, and Student Access. The Associate Director works closely with Student Care Coordination, Student Health Center, Student Access, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and the UCC’s Continuity, Psychiatry, Programs, and Administration. Reporting directly to the UCC Director, the Associate Director supervises a leadership team made up of four program managers to provide leadership, assign cases in a timely and appropriate manner, oversee quality improvement activities such as chart review and documentation processes, and ensure compliance with individual service plans. In partnership with the Director as well as the Associate Directors for Continuity, Psychiatry, and Programs this position coordinates intake teams and referral services within the clinic and works to build a highly effective team within a collaborative and interdependent clinic. The Associate Director functions as a staff psychologist approximately 30% of the time, offering diagnostic assessment and short-term therapy in individual and group settings for Vanderbilt students and assists Urgent Care as needed. This position will also perform community outreach, consultation, and liaison activities, and will serve as a senior clinical supervisor for unlicensed and newly licensed staff as well as graduate trainees. Primary leadership in the management of the Training, Outreach, and Psychological Assessment team (Programs) Supervises a leadership team of four program managers, provides day-to-day oversight, assigns cases, reviews terminations and referrals, approves extensions for bridge appointments, oversees quality improvement such as chart review and documentation, identifies resource needs, advocates for staff, supports strategic innovation, and ensures compliance with individual service plans and UCC protocols. Provide supervision and leadership training programs for graduate students in psychology including intermediate and advanced practica, predoctoral interns, and postdoctoral fellows, including identification, assignment, documentation, and compensation of trainee supervisors to ensure coverage and compliance with University policies. Assist with selection of trainees, trainee evaluation, supervisor selection and duties, and development and implementation of training policies and procedures, training data analysis, and reports for program evaluation. Ensure compliance with APA requirements and related standards to maintain APA accreditation for the doctoral internship program. Ensure compliance with APPIC and related standards to maintain APPIC membership for the postdoctoral fellowship program. Represent and advocate for the training program and UCC to professional organizations (APA, ACCTA, APPIC) and local/regional organizations and academic programs in clinical and counseling psychology and clinical social work. Provide leadership and direction to outreach and programmatic efforts to support campus and individual mental health, wellness, and skill development. Review assessment and learning outcome data from outreach efforts (and from surveys) to identify trends and needs; work with the Director and associate directors to ensure compliance with outreach requirements of individual service plans of all clinicians. Provide leadership to the UCC assessment unit Provide leadership to the assessment unit and support its work in collaboration with the medication management team, Student Health Center, and Student Access. Monitor waitlist times and identify methods to reduce time from referral to completion. Provides leadership to the University Counseling Center under the Director Collaborates with Associate Directors to engage in quality improvement and strategic planning, develops protocols and practices, trains staff on UCC policies, reviews and revises intakes and referrals, manages conflicts of interest, ensures appropriate leadership coverage, develops agendas for staff meetings, and ensures effective functioning of the UCC. Develops and implements UCC Clinical Guidelines & Procedures to ensure service consistency and administrative performance. Coordinates intakes and referrals to assign cases to clinicians promptly; oversees consistency in chart review and documentation. Meets for consultation and strategizes care for students with excessive no-shows to ensure compliance and increase clinical hours utilization. Leads recruitment of clinical and professional staff to attract/retain talent aligned with the Center’s mission. Assists in preparing program reports, including annual reports, budgets, and special reports for administrators as needed. Leads recruitment of staff to attract/retain talent contributing to the Center’s mission. Other program responsibilities Ensure all clinical staff receive appropriate orientation and training on UCC policies and procedures. Collaborate with UCC administrators for outreach, developmental programming, and clinical services to balance outreach with clinical resource needs. Provide professional, short-term mental health services to students Provide integrated assessment considering bio-psycho-social factors and guide treatment planning. Develop multidisciplinary, short-term treatment plans and collaborate with other resources for student benefit. Maintain Individual Service Plans with a 30% direct service caseload (groups/outreach constituting 1-2% of total) throughout the academic year. Participate in development of innovative interventions and skill development programs based on campus mental health trends and needs. Develop working relationships with the Vanderbilt community and campus partners to support student needs and safety. Provide outreach and educational programming Provide outreach and educational programming to the campus community to support mental health, wellness, and skill development. Maintain appropriate and timely documentation for recordkeeping and communication with other service providers according to ethical and legal standards. Assist Urgent Care as needed related to involuntary hospitalizations and after-hours support for safety. Provide clinical supervision for staff and trainees Provide clinical and administrative supervision to post-doctoral, doctoral, and practicum trainees as necessary. Provide supervision for unlicensed and newly licensed staff and graduate trainees to support licensure requirements and skill development. Participate in training activities (case conference, small group supervision, seminars/workshops) to support trainee development. Co-facilitate therapy and skill-based groups with trainees for students and for trainee learning. Other duties Serve on divisional committees and working groups; participate in division-wide events to support colleagues. Learn and comply with financial policies related to travel, procurement, and expense reporting. Engage in professional development and presentations to expand skills for the UCC team. Perform other duties to enhance the student experience and facilitate the success of the University, division, or department. Supervisory Relationships This position has administrative and clinical supervisory responsibilities for four program managers, plus two additional psychologists or counselors, including unlicensed and newly licensed clinicians, with indirect reporting for trainees. On occasion, may provide clinical supervision to unlicensed psychologists on the Care team. This position reports administratively and functionally to the UCC Director. Education and Certifications A doctoral degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work or related field is necessary. Completion of an APA-accredited internship is necessary. Licensure as a Psychologist with a Tennessee HSP designation, or current licensure in another state with ability to obtain licensure in Tennessee within one year of employment is required. Experience and Skills 4+ years of post-licensure clinical experience with supervision required; 8+ years preferred. Completion of practicum and internship is required. Training and experience with students/clients with complex diagnoses is preferred. Demonstrated ability to interact with patients/clients from diverse backgrounds is required. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to form and maintain relationships with students, colleagues, and stakeholders are required. Growth mindset and willingness to learn are necessary. Ability to work effectively within a team framework is necessary. Experience with a young adult population is strongly preferred. Experience with high-acuity patients and crisis care is preferred. Experience in higher education settings is preferred. Ability to provide care to students with complex histories and to terminate or refer with minimal supervision is preferred. Knowledge and skills in serving diverse student populations (APIDA, international, Latinx, African-American, LGBTQI, military, first-generation, low-income, rural) is preferred. Strong written and oral communication, including public speaking and group facilitation, is preferred.
