Under the supervision of the Chief Sonographer and Medical Director, this position is responsible for independently performing 2-dimensional, color Doppler and Doppler echocardiograms. This position also assists in inventory of supplies and equipment maintenance. Job requires a high level of knowledge to read and interpret test results, especially abnormal or atypical results.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Performs 2-dimensional, color Doppler and Doppler echocardiograms. Proficient in non-imaging continuous Doppler to provide effective results for diagnosing and imaging pathologies (Valvular, Congenital, Systolic, Diastology). Interprets test results and notifies referring physician or house officer of a preliminary report. Assists in scheduling cardiac ultrasound procedures for inpatients and outpatients when there is question of availability. Responsible for inventory of supplies in the Echo Lab. Responsible for daily cleaning of equipment with approved hospital disinfectant and infection control guidelines. Maintains echo equipment and resolves minor operating problems; difficult/complex problems referred to the echo supervisor. Reviews patient chart to obtain pertinent clinical history to perform tests and accurately interpret cardiac examinations. Explains procedure to the patient and positions patient for the cardiac ultrasound examination, ensuring comfort and understanding. Performs several portable studies per day requiring mobilization of equipment. Records and reviews test results for accuracy and prepares test reports; uses electronic medical records and reporting systems to obtain a permanent record of the cardiac examination. Records, calculates and plots known control values on technical instruments to ensure reliability and accuracy of test results. Maintains testing rooms in clean and orderly condition; disposes of soiled linen, stocks supplies, and cleans equipment. Keeps current regarding developments in instrumentation and trends in cardiac ultrasound testing; attends seminars and meetings per approval of echo supervisor. Performs minor clerical duties as required by echo supervisor or Technical Director (e.g., answering phones). Performs all other duties as necessary. All testing is performed without physician assistance with minimal supervision of test results by the echo supervisor.
Job Summary
Responsible for oversight of maintaining an inventory of cardiac ultrasound supplies, leading echocardiography technologists, and maintaining cardiac ultrasound equipment.
Essential Functions
Performs high-quality echocardiographic examinations according to the ARIC study protocol in a timely manner. Ensures images and records are properly completed with participant identification data and labeling. Discusses relevant clinical findings with the center manager and/or supervising physician to ensure timely follow-up. Orients and trains other echo technicians. Ensures proper participant preparation, verifies screening protocols, and answers questions. Performs quality control on assigned equipment and reports issues in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Education Bachelor\'s Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography preferred. Associate\'s Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or equivalent program with a Cardiovascular Technologist Certificate required. Experience in lieu of a degree: No. Licenses and Credentials: ARDCS or CCI certification required.
Two (2) years of experience as a registered echocardiography or vascular technologist; 2-3 years preferred. An understanding of cardiac anatomy, physiology and hemodynamics is required.
Skills and Abilities
High technical expertise with knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology and hemodynamics. Analytical ability to perform and analyze complex cardiac pathologies by echocardiography. Ability to provide an initial interpretation to referring physicians; difficult/complex cases should be reviewed with the echo supervisor. Manual dexterity to work with ultrasound transducers and equipment controls. Strong understanding of equipment function and ultrasound physics. Ability to interact with patients and staff to ensure smooth lab flow and cooperation. Flexibility; interact with physicians for information exchange. Ability to work weekend shifts. Ability to perform bedside echocardiograms in intensive care units. Mastery of duties and responsibilities in this job description.
