Hermeus
Overview
Hermeus is a venture capital-backed aerospace and defense technology company. The business is focused on building high-speed products that sustainably deliver asymmetric advantage to the Department of Defense and allied partners. Utilizing an iterative development approach to aircraft, Hermeus’ high-Mach and hypersonic aircraft aim to deliver capabilities at a pace not seen in the U.S. since the 1950s.
Component Responsible Engineer
is responsible for designing, building, qualifying, acceptance testing, and delivering flight valves, actuators, mechanisms, and other mechanical systems. This role is highly hands-on and technical, with ownership from clean sheet design through development and into production of flight hardware integrated into engine and vehicle systems.
This highly interdisciplinary role requires strong first-principles knowledge in mechanics, fluids, thermal sciences, and manufacturing; the ability to communicate requirements in a rapidly changing environment; and the drive to rapidly and safely create novel, cutting-edge hardware to accelerate the future of hypersonic travel.
Responsibilities
Fully own critical flight hardware from concept to delivery
Work with system owners to architect and integrate components within engine and vehicle systems
Perform system-level architecture, sizing, and design trades
Lead system design, analysis, development testing, qualification, and production introduction of mechanical systems
Scope vehicle-level operational methods and limits to ensure reliability and personnel safety across production and operations
Make risk-conscious technical decisions aligned with program posture
Prioritize tasks to meet top-level program and company objectives
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline (mechanical, aerospace, physics, materials, etc.)
Experience using CAD to design parts and assemblies
5+ years of engineering, competition team, or applied research experience related to fluids, mechanisms, or engine systems
Willingness to travel to support hardware builds and flight tests
Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed
Positive attitude in the face of extreme technical challenges
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in engineering discipline (mechanical, aerospace, physics, materials, etc.)
4+ years of experience developing hardware from concept to production
Proficiency in compressible/incompressible flow, thermodynamics, kinematics, mechanism design, mechanics of materials, and materials
Strong knowledge of GD&T and stack-up analysis
Scripting experience (Python, Matlab, Excel, VBA, etc.)
Ability to execute in a scrappy, entrepreneurial manner with tight timelines
Professional experience using Siemens NX/Teamcenter and ANSYS
Export Control and Equal Opportunity U.S. EXPORT CONTROL COMPLIANCE STATUS
The person hired will have access to information and items subject to U.S. export controls, and therefore, must either be a “U.S. person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.62 or otherwise eligible for deemed export licensing. US persons include U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents (green card holders), and asylees and refugees with such status granted, not pending.
